According to Italian media outlet Il Giorno, Serie A giants AC Milan have made it clear that they are firmly committed to building a new and modern stadium in the San Francisco area of the San Donato area of Milanese. The club's top management is currently in active dialogue with the Mayor of San Donato, Francesco Squeerry, who is open and ready to make a request to Lombardy Governor Fontana, a higher authority, to promote a series of policies aimed at supporting the construction of the new stadium and its surrounding facilities, including but not limited to hotels, restaurants, office buildings, the official AC Milan Store, the Rossoneri Museum, a large public plaza and a multi-purpose auditorium. However, before further implementation of the specific project agreement, there are several urban planning adjustments related to the area that need to be resolved to ensure the legal compliance of the project.
At the same time, in a letter to the governor of Lombardy, Atrio Fontana, AC Milan President Paulo Scaloni expressed the hope that the government agencies of both sides will be able to resolve all relevant issues as soon as possible and clear the obstacles so that the club can proceed with the planned investment.
As for city rivals Inter Milan, CEO Alessandro Antonello admitted that the new stadium at the San Siro was hampered by Italian bureaucracy and long-term public debate, which made the plan for a new stadium named "Cathedral" slow to progress, which made both Inter Milan and AC Milan deeply disappointed. Inter Milan have now turned their attention to Rozano on the outskirts of Milan as the site of their next main stadium, while AC Milan are expected to relocate to San Donato.
Back in December 2021, Inter Milan and AC Milan jointly unveiled ambitious plans to build a new stadium at the San Siro, which is expected to be ready for use in 2027 after the demolition of the old Meazza Stadium. However, the reality is that the cumbersome approval process and extensive discussion among the community have prevented the plan from moving forward as planned.
Faced with this situation, the mayor of Milan, Sala, recently proposed to the two clubs to buy and jointly invest around 300 million euros to renovate the San Siro Stadium. Despite this, the management of Inter Milan and AC Milan seem to have reservations about this, and may choose to leave the historic San Siro Stadium in the future and build their brand new arena in another location.
