On March 8, at the second session of the second session of the 14th National People's Congress, Jin Zhuanglong, Minister of Industry and Information Technology, proposed to promote the deep integration of informatization and industrialization, strengthen 5G evolution, and support 5G-A development. At MWC 2024 in February, 5G-A will also be the "center of conversation" for the industry. The three major domestic operators, as well as Huawei and ZTE, have announced their 5G-A commercialization schedules, injecting full confidence into the official commercial use of 5G-A. Cloud-network convergence is a unique advantage for the development of 5G-A

5 G-A is an evolutionary version of the 5G network. In April 2021, the International Organization for Standardization's 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Program) officially determined "5G-Advanced" as the official name for the next stage of 5G evolution. Compared with 5G, 5G-A further improves network throughput, with a theoretical peak downlink rate of 10 Gbit/s, millisecond-level latency and centimeter-level positioning accuracy, supporting 100 billion connections in all scenarios and capabilities, and improving network performance by 10 times. In recent years, China Telecom has continued to strengthen the R&D and innovative practice of 5G-A new technologies to help the development of 5G and empower thousands of industries. It is worth noting that 5G-A has the characteristics of high-speed ubiquity, space-ground integration, cloud-network integration, intelligence and agility, green and low-carbon, security and controllability, which coincides with China Telecom's development concept of cloud-network integration. At present, China Telecom has built the world's largest 5G SA co-construction and sharing network, proposed a "three-layer and four-sided" 5G-A core network architecture, and led more than 30 3GPP international standards, formed more than 600 patents, and completed a number of innovation pilots. At the same time, China Telecom is also comprehensively promoting the commercial implementation of 5G-A. According to China Telecom's 2023 annual financial report, China Telecom has actively deployed 5G-A key direction innovation, carried out carrier aggregation deployment, promoted the innovative application of cross-domain joint dispatching of "time, frequency, and space" resources, and greatly improved user experience; completed the multi-frequency, multi-carrier, and multi-vendor scale trials of the RedCap live network, built demonstration applications in steel, petrochemical, ports and other industries, and promoted large-scale commercial deployment; and took the lead in completing 5G NR based on real satellites NTN (non-terrestrial network) testing and verification, and carrying out pilot technologies such as low-altitude communication, integrated synaesthesia, and NTN, to accelerate the commercial maturity of 5G-A.

5G-A synaesthesia integrates to help the development of low-altitude economy

At present, "the first year of 5G-A commercial use will officially start in 2024" has become an industry consensus, and 5G-A, as a new national infrastructure, is also the only way to evolve to 6G. At the same time, 5G-A, as the main network coverage technology in the low-altitude economy, is also expected to benefit from the rapid development of the low-altitude economy. As we all know, 5G technology can meet the communication service needs of low-altitude and deep coverage and provide low-latency guarantee for general aviation flight equipment with its distinctive characteristics of large bandwidth, low latency, anti-interference, wide access, and multi-beam direction. The "Implementation Plan for the Innovative Application of General Aviation Equipment (2024-2030)" clearly points out that it is necessary to promote the construction of an intelligent and efficient new operation service system, accelerate the integration of 5G and satellite Internet, and support the exploration of low-altitude intelligent networking technologies and standards for the interconnection of air, space, ground and ground facilities and information exchange. As an "upgraded version" of 5G, 5G-A can play a role in the low-altitude economy. Not long ago, China Telecom Zhejiang completed the commercial verification of 5G-A CLUSTER DRS (base station cluster-level dynamic beamsharing) based on intelligent orchestration. According to the flight trajectory and working characteristics of the UAV, the 5G-A network dynamically builds a "base station cluster" with the UAV as the center to realize airspace beam sharing and flexibly reduce interference. Measured data in Hangzhou's Qingshan Lake Water Forest and Industrial Park show that the low-altitude uplink rate of UAVs can be increased by more than 40% using the 5G-A network, which can achieve steady-state 4K ultra-high-definition video transmission. In addition, Zhejiang Company carried out a pilot 5G-A Cluster DRS low-altitude communication network coverage over Shangyu District, Shaoxing City, with a pilot area of 100 square kilometers.

Work with industry partners to draw a grand blueprint for 5G-A commercialization

"China Telecom adheres to innovation leadership, continues to strengthen 5G-A technology innovation practices, and works with Huawei and other manufacturers to continue innovation pilots to ensure leading network evolution. Huang Lilian, general manager of China Telecom's 5G Co-construction and Sharing Working Group, spoke at MWC 2024. In Shanghai, China Telecom and Huawei completed 5G applications in multiple scenarios at the Baosteel plant and introduced 5G-A technology to facilitate Baosteel's digital transformation. Based on 5G-A large uplink AI quality inspection, remote maintainability and data interconnection and interoperability of the front and rear processes are realized. 5G-A P-IoT (Passive Internet of Things) technology organically combines production and logistics users to provide users with better services. In Xi'an, China Telecom and Huawei launched a 5G-A 3CC (three-carrier aggregation) deployment, bringing downlink 4 Gbit/s and uplink 1 Gbit/s to meet the network capacity requirements in multi-user scenarios and ensure multiple services such as live streaming, XR (extended reality), and glasses-free 3D. In addition, in scenic spots such as the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, China Telecom has also deployed the "time, frequency, and space" intelligent selection solution to improve the 5G network speed through the "time, frequency, and space" three-domain collaboration, which greatly enhances users' 5G perception. In Hangzhou, China Telecom and ZTE have built a 5G-A nomadic base station to provide high-capacity, high-reliability, and low-latency network underlying capabilities for new media production. In addition, the 5G-A computing network integrated nomadic base station also realizes ultra-high-definition video two-way transmission and green-screen real-world keying, and with the help of China Telecom's cloud computing power, real-time rendering is completed to achieve virtual interaction in the same frame. China Telecom continues to promote 5G-A new technologies, works closely with various industries, and implements the ten major application scenarios of 5G-A by exploring in the six directions of seamless 10 Gigabit, deterministic capabilities, global synaesthesia, 100 billion IoT, air-space-ground integration, and ubiquitous intelligence. According to Huang Lilian, 2024 is regarded as the first year of 5G-A commercialization, and China Telecom believes that 5G-A can bring new capabilities and experiences in all aspects of new communications, new connections, new computing power, new intelligence, new security, and new vision, continue to help users create greater value, bring more new experiences to users, and provide more possibilities for partners to jointly build a new ecosystem. It is believed that in the future, China Telecom will continue to consolidate the new digital infrastructure of high-speed ubiquity, integration of space and earth, and cloud-network integration, actively promote the strategic layout for 5G-A evolution, and continuously strengthen the joint innovation of the 5G-A industrial ecology, so as to contribute to the high-quality development of the digital economy.
