Motorola launches the new Edge series to bring back the wooden back cover mobile phone

author:cnBeta

Motorola has unveiled three new Edge series phones that return to a classic design feature that was first introduced a decade ago: a wooden back case. The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is the highest-spec of the three, and the only one to have a "solid wood" back panel to choose from (although the peach-colored faux leather also looks pretty too). Motorola will launch the phones outside the U.S. first "in the coming weeks," but said it will work to "expand the Edge series in North America this year."

The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8S Gen 3 chipset, which is slightly less than the top-of-the-line 8 Gen 3. It comes with a 6.7-inch OLED screen with a 144Hz refresh rate and is Pantone certified.

The Ultra phone is IP68 rated, fully waterproof, and supports wireless charging, with a 50-megapixel anti-shake main camera and a 64-megapixel telephoto camera mounted on the back, both with optical image stabilization, and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera that can be used as a macro.

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro sits below the Ultra and is powered by a mid-range Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip, while the Edge 50 Fusion is powered by a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chip. Opting for the Pro model also gives you an additional camera: a 10-megapixel stabilized 3x telephoto camera. Motorola uses artificial intelligence on all three phones, including Google's Magic Editor in Photos, though only the first 10 saved edits are free, a process that doesn't require a Google One subscription.

Typical for Motorola, Edge devices are launched in the U.S. under the generic "Edge" and "Edge Plus" brands after their debut in the international market. Currently, Motorola sells two Edge devices on its online store – and if Motorola plans to "expand" its product assortment in the US, we could see all three devices available on US soil.

The Edge 50 Fusion comes in hot pink pigmented leather that seems to go well with the T-Mobile accent color, while the Edge 50 Pro is available in black and lilac plain leather.

The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra starts at 999 euros, the Edge 50 Pro starts at 699 euros, and the Edge 50 Fusion starts at 399 euros. They will initially be sold in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and parts of Oceania.
