The reporter recently learned from the Guangxi Liuzhou City Cultural Relics Protection and Archaeology Research Center that Liuzhou City, together with the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Guangxi Institute of Cultural Relics Protection and Archaeology, conducted archaeological excavations at the Fengyan site for more than five months, and cleaned up a tomb that was 40,000 to 30,000 years old, which provided important information for understanding the origin and diffusion of early modern humans and human physical characteristics in Liuzhou and even the entire South China region.

The Fengyan site is located in a cave on the mountainside of Luohan Mountain in Liuzhou City. Among them, the cave hall numbered A, with an area of about 250 square meters, preserves a relatively rich cultural accumulation. The excavation work will start in early June 2023 and end in late November, with an excavation area of about 50 square meters, and 1 tomb from 40,000 to 30,000 years ago, 27 fire relics, 1 active surface, and 3 ash pits have been found, and a large number of cultural relics with clear stratigraphic relationships have been found, including production tools such as stone tools and pottery, living utensils, and a large number of stones, broken blocks, stone cores, stone chips, and debris related to the processing of stone tools. In addition, the remains of a large number of aquatic and terrestrial animals have been found.

The relevant person in charge of the Liuzhou Cultural Relics Protection and Archaeological Research Center said that the excavation and research of the Fengyan site is one of the rare large-scale cave archaeological excavation projects in Liuzhou in recent years, which is of great significance for understanding the characteristics and connotations of prehistoric culture in the region, establishing the status of Liuzhou in China's prehistoric culture, and exploring the cave sites in the entire Liuzhou area, the prehistory of Liuzhou, the transition of the old Neolithic Age, the prehistoric human behavior pattern, human physique, the ancient environment and its changes, and the interaction between people and the environment.
