From June 1965 to August 1973, China successively dispatched more than 320,000 troops in engineering, railway, antiaircraft artillery, minesweeping, and logistics to carry out combat missions in northern Vietnam to aid Vietnam in resisting the United States.
The detachment was responsible for the wartime engineering support tasks of four railways from Hanoi to Friendship Pass, Hanoi to Lao Cai, Dong Anh to Tai Nguyen, and Kefu to Taiyuan, with a total length of 554 kilometers. With the development of the war, according to the relevant agreements signed between the Chinese and Vietnamese governments, a total of 101 emergency repair and preparatory projects such as anti-air raid emergency repairs, road network renovation, combat readiness, and flood prevention and reinforcement of bridges were also included.
During the more than five years of aiding Vietnam to resist the United States, 10 regiments of the 1st, 2nd, 12th, and 13th divisions of the 1st, 2nd, 12th, and 13th divisions of the 1st and 6th detachments of the Chinese logistics forces built a total of 117 kilometers of railways, rebuilt 362 kilometers of railways, rushed to build 98 kilometers of railway combat readiness projects, rushed to build 420 kilometers of highways, built 30 new railway bridges and 14 tunnels, rebuilt and expanded 20 stations, erected 1,023 pairs of communication lines, and laid nearly 8 kilometers of underwater communication cables. It played an important role in the victory of the Vietnamese people's War of Resistance against US Aggression and National Salvation and the post-war economic construction.
While completing the task of rushing to repair and build railways and highways, the unit also actively carried out 849 air combat operations, shot down 223 enemy planes, damaged 250 planes, and captured and killed 12 US pilots.
In the War of Resistance Against US Aggression in Vietnam, many advanced units and heroic figures emerged: The 1st Battalion of the 6th Regiment, the 1st Battalion of the 10th Regiment, the 7th Regiment High Aircraft Company, and the 9th Regiment High Aircraft Company of the First Detachment were awarded commendations by the Central Military Commission; 2 units of the 1st and 6th detachments were awarded collective first-class meritorious service, 66 units were awarded collective second-class meritorious service, and 669 units were awarded collective third-class meritorious service; 21 people were awarded first-class meritorious service, 119 were awarded second-class meritorious service, and 13,315 persons were awarded third-class meritorious service. 3,223 were wounded and 502 died heroically.
