ask

What diseases can erythromycin ointment treat?

answer

Purulent skin disease. For purulent skin diseases or common infections caused by pathogenic bacteria, such as folliculitis, pustules, etc., an appropriate amount of ointment can be applied to the affected area.

Infection of small burns and ulcers. In case of small and minor burns and scalds, you can rinse the wound with cold water for 10~20 minutes, and apply a thin layer of ointment on the surface of the injured skin after the pain is relieved.

Acne vulgaris (pimples). If folliculitis is caused by excessive sebum secretion or clogged hair follicles, an ointment can be applied to the affected area. When the acne is not severe (no breakage, no infection), erythromycin ointment is not recommended.

Angular cheilitis (rotten corners of the mouth). If bacterial angular cheilitis develops, a small amount of ointment can be applied to the infected area, and vitamin B2 supplementation must be made.

Mosquito bites. When the mosquito bite is more serious, the bite should be cleaned and disinfected in time, and an appropriate amount of this ointment should be applied.

ask

What are the consequences of misuse of erythromycin ointment?

answer

Dry skin. The most common side effect of erythromycin ointment is dry skin. The drug is mainly aimed at bacterial infection skin diseases, which can play an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial role, but long-term use will cause dry skin.

Anaphylaxis. Some people may experience these discomforts after using erythromycin ointment: allergic reactions, the degree of allergy varies from person to person, often manifested as redness, swelling, urticaria-like symptoms, irritation, local skin burning, itching, etc.

Antimicrobial resistance. Erythromycin ointment is an antibiotic drug that can easily develop resistance when used for a long time. In particular, children have thin skin, abundant blood circulation, and strong absorption of drugs by the skin, which is more likely to develop bacterial resistance.

Warm reminder: Many people think that erythromycin ointment and erythromycin eye ointment are called erythromycin and can be used casually. Although the main ingredient in both is erythromycin, the amount of erythromycin contained is different. The concentration of erythromycin in the ointment is 1%, while the concentration of the ointment is 0.5% or less. The indications for both are also completely different: erythromycin ointment can be used for purulent skin diseases such as impetigo, small burns, ulcer surface infections or acne. Erythromycin eye ointment can be used for trachoma, conjunctivitis, blepharitis, extraphthalmitis, etc.

According to the provisions of the national pharmacopoeia, the ophthalmic preparation shall not detect any bacteria, and the preparation is required to be delicate and non-irritating, but the sterility of the ointment is relatively relaxed, so it is not advisable to replace the ophthalmic ointment with ointment, otherwise it may cause serious ocular adverse reactions.
