Liu Gongquan (778-865), the name Chenghang, a great calligrapher of the Tang Dynasty, was a native of Hedong County (now Yongji, Shanxi). He was named the Duke of Hedong County, and later generations also called him "Liu Hedong". Gongquan is considered to be the successor of Yan Zhenqing, and the two are collectively known as "Yan Liu" and are known as one of the models of calligraphy in the past dynasties. He and Ouyang Xun, Yan Zhenqing, and Zhao Mengfu are known as the "Four Masters of Regular Script".
Liu Gongquan's "Monument of the Original Road" is one of his relatively rare small block works. The style of this work is strong and handsome, and the font is strong and rich, although it is less circulated, it is very popular. "The Original Dao" is the representative work of the Tang Dynasty writer Han Yu, expressing the views of retro Confucianism and opposition to Buddhism.
