The United States and Japan are about to hold a summit, and media reports that US President Joe Biden will also take the opportunity to announce the scope of application of the US-Philippines mutual defense treaty, which is a naked intimidation. The mainland's rivalry with the Philippines in the South China Sea has intensified, and Marcos Jr. has been stirring up trouble since his election, and now the scope of this mutual defense treaty is actually applied to the Sierra Madre ship, which is on Ren'ai Jiao. There is something wrong with the ship being broken, there is something wrong with the coast guard, and the world has not seen any kind of treaty in this form.
The South China Sea is a disputed area and has nothing to do with the U.S.-Philippines defense treaty. Now the United States is not helping others, and the United States originally had its own attitude on this issue, but now it is providing a basis for the United States to come up with a so-called defense treaty against China. From the Cold War to the post-Cold War era, the United States has always taken the same position on the South China Sea disputes.
In the aftermath of the Paracel conflict in January 1974, the U.S. State Department said that the South China Sea dispute was resolved by the complainant countries themselves and had nothing to do with U.S. and Philippine defense. In October 1991, when Larson, then commander of the US Pacific Command, was interviewed in Malaysia, he made several remarks on the issue of the Spratly Islands.
First, Larson said that the United States maintains an unclear position because the United States has no interest in intervening. Second, the United States does not have a contingency plan to enter the Spratlys in the event of a conflict. Thirdly, the controversy should be a joint effort by the countries concerned, and there should be regional organizations.
For example, if ASEAN finds a solution, the United States hopes that the complainant country will be able to resolve the issue through political channels rather than military means. China and Vietnam are hostile in the process of asserting sovereignty, and the United States works under the United Nations with ASEAN, the Soviet Union, and other countries in a consultative rather than threatening manner.
In a 1998 interview, Crimmings, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, said that while the United States knew that the Spratly Islands were disputed waters, it wanted to resolve the issue peacefully. He reiterated that the United States would not support any one complainant against another, as had been very clear before.
Now the United States has said that it wants to support a certain country, and it is completely unhelpful to others. Because in 1999, an old Philippine landing ship, the Sierra Madre, ran aground on Second Thomas Shoal and deliberately did not tow it away. At present, there are seven Philippine Marines on the ship, and it is obvious that the Philippines is occupying the mountains and forcibly occupying China's territory.
The United States is now backsliding, forgetting its historical position, and this is only aimed at China. In fact, many things that the United States is doing now are targeted, and they are now doing it in order to maintain hegemony. The United States is in a period of weakness, and its national strength is constantly declining, but dying to save face is actually a phenomenon before the fall of an empire.
