Born in 1962 in Yongdeng County, Lanzhou, Gansu Province, He Yanzhong has lived in a poor family environment since he was a child. There are five siblings in the family, and my father died young, so all the responsibilities fell on my mother alone.
In that era of scarcity of materials, He Yanzhong's family could not even guarantee a normal food supply.
But this difficult environment did not wear down the burning fighting spirit in He Yanzhong's heart. He knows that only by his own hard work can he change the status quo of family poverty.
So, in 1986, when he was just over 24 years old, He Yanzhong resolutely decided to embark on the road of entrepreneurship. He firmly believes that he will be able to become a successful entrepreneur with the knowledge and skills he has acquired.
At that time, He Yanzhong only had a meager savings of tens of thousands of yuan, but he still resolutely resigned from his job and returned to his hometown to start the artificial breeding of rainbow trout. Initially, he was simply drawn to the love of this amazing fish and did not know much about its scientific potential.
It wasn't until he later participated in the visit and study activities of the experimental station that he began to gradually realize the huge development space of rainbow trout in this field.
After in-depth research and practice, He Yanzhong found that the hot spring water introduced from "Yaowang Spring" could meet the special needs of rainbow trout for water temperature, thus officially starting his own breeding journey.
But in his initial attempts, it wasn't all smooth sailing. Due to inadequate farming techniques and improper handling during transportation, a large number of rainbow trout died on the way, and even some schools that had already reached their destination were killed due to deteriorating health.
The lesson of this failure made He Yanzhong deeply realize that when stepping into the unknown, one cannot ignore details and common sense. In order to overcome this serious setback, he took the initiative to contact the technical experts of the experimental station, sought advice from them, and obtained valuable solutions.
After unremitting exploration and improvement, He Yanzhong finally broke out of his own world in the field of rainbow trout farming.
Under the influence of He Yanzhong, more and more local farmers began to devote themselves to the artificial breeding and breeding of rainbow trout, which jointly promoted the development of the agricultural economy in their hometown.
In 1998, more than 70% of the rainbow trout in Gansu Province was produced in Yongdeng County, and this small county town has become the home of rainbow trout in the world.
Through his own hard work, He Yanzhong finally got rid of the poverty at the beginning and grew into a well-respected leader in the industry. He has achieved financial freedom, but instead of resting on his laurels, he has developed even greater ideals.
After having a relatively large amount of savings, He Yanzhong did not choose to enjoy Qingfu in peace, but gave birth to a grander ideal - to breed rainbow trout at the source of the glacier in the Qilian Mountains, thousands of miles away.
This idea shocked and puzzled his family at the time.
But He Yanzhong firmly believes that as long as there is enough determination and courage, any difficulties can be overcome. After in-depth research, he found that the crescent moon spring in Dunhuang, known as the "first spring in the desert", has been gushing water continuously since the Han Dynasty in the second century BC, and has never dried up.
This gave He Yanzhong enough confidence that raising fish in the desert was not an unattainable dream.
So, in 2000, He Yanzhong resolutely embarked on an expedition to Dunhuang. When he witnessed the real scene of the yellow sand and deserted sky, his heart was suddenly full of worry.
He picked up a bucket of water and threw it on the sand, only to find that the droplets quickly disappeared as soon as they touched the ground, which made his brow furrow even tighter.
But just as He Yanzhong was thinking about his questions as he walked, suddenly, a beautiful oasis came into view, which was the famous Xitugou, where the ancients had lived more than 3,000 years ago.
After many tests, He Yanzhong confirmed that the water quality here is completely suitable for the growth of rainbow trout, and he suddenly became enlightened. He made up his mind to reclaim the fish pond in the downstream area of the Xitugou water source.
With the strong support of the local government, He Yanzhong led the heroic team members to unite and cooperate in this vast desert to meet various difficult challenges.
They built roads, installed electric lights, planted trees, excavated fish ponds, and built factories...... After a long period of struggle, a large-scale fish farming base covering an area of 1,200 acres has finally been formed, of which more than 600,000 rainbow trout seedlings have been put into production.
Despite the difficulties encountered in the process, all employees are full of expectations and longing. They believe that as long as they persevere, they will be able to make this otherwise barren desert bloom into beautiful flowers.
However, fate does not seem to favor He Yanzhong's career. The ensuing natural disasters began to severely hit his carefully constructed dream.
In early May 2006, a violent sandstorm suddenly hit Dunhuang, dealing a serious blow to He Yanzhong's team's career. Dozens of feet of sand walls swept through like beasts, toppling the two-story tech building in an instant, causing the employees who witnessed the scene to fear and want to leave.
In the face of this difficult situation, He Yanzhong stood up to comfort and motivate the team members in a humorous and encouraging way, encouraging everyone to move forward bravely. He firmly believes that as long as everyone works together, they will be able to tide over the difficulties.
But the ensuing natural disasters continue to test his resolve.
At the end of June 2007, a sudden torrential downpour in the upper reaches of Sunshine Town triggered a flood. He Yanzhong's farm has been devastated, with thousands of rainbow trout drying, more than 80 employees leaving their jobs and investors withdrawing their money, leaving him in an unprecedented predicament.
When everyone thought that why Yanzhong would give in, he made a remarkable decision - to rebuild the "desert Dujiangyan". He is determined to fight floods and improve the desert environment, rather than focusing solely on farming to make money.
With the strong support of the Dunhuang Municipal Government, He Yanzhong led the team to start the arduous construction of the project. They dug 13 diversion channels of more than 100 kilometers at the flood outlet upstream of Xitugou, and excavated an artificial lake deep in the desert with an astonishing amount of water.
After a long period of hard work, they finally succeeded in controlling the floods, turning the intermittent heavy rains into a valuable resource.
He Yanzhong's "desert Dujiangyan" not only successfully stopped the floods, but also nourished the villages downstream, resulting in the development of rice and grape cultivation and a significant increase in the income level of local residents.
In the face of successive major blows, He Yanzhong never gave up his beliefs, but found the possibility of rebuilding his career in the disaster. He was bold and innovative, relying on local characteristics, and established a characteristic industrial park integrating tourism, breeding and tourism.
Under He Yanzhong's meticulous construction, the Kumtag Desert, which once resembled a wild beast, retreated by 5 to 6 kilometers, and was replaced by a vibrant oasis and flying birds.
This miraculous reversal undoubtedly demonstrates his unremitting pursuit, firm will and hard work that has lasted for more than ten years. Although he had fainted and fallen to the ground many times in the scorching desert environment, he never had the slightest regret, let alone squandered his blood on this vast loess.
With the unremitting efforts of He Yanzhong, this once terrifying desert has now been transformed into a characteristic industrial park integrating breeding and tourism.
Not only is it rich in rainbow trout, but it also has a unique natural scenery that attracts a steady stream of tourists. And as a support for all this, it is He Yanzhong's diligent pursuit of career and social responsibility over the years.
In the depths of the desert, he excavated an artificial lake with an astonishing amount of water, which not only successfully controlled the flooding, but also transformed the intermittent heavy rains into a favorable resource, turning the original turbid flood water into pure and sweet "desert mineral water".
On the shores of the beautiful lake, Mr. He has not stopped planting trees. It is precisely in this way that his meticulously constructed triple protection measures------ clay sand fixation, stone embankment sand blocking and plant sand control measures, have been widely praised and called "the desert version of Dujiangyan".
The raging flood water smelts into sweet springs here, while also nourishing the villages downstream. Thousands of people have benefited from this, and the abundance of water has led to the development of rice and viticulture, and the income level of the population has increased significantly.
This industrial park built by He Yanzhong has not only brought tangible benefits to the local people, but also brought new vitality and hope to this once barren desert.
