According to the factory, the container is 2 meters long, 2.2 meters wide and 3.4 meters high, and is filled with electroplating solution containing hexavalent chromium, an acidic carcinogen. It is a substance that is easily absorbed by the body, and can enter the body by breath and skin contact. In 2017, the International Health Organization considered hexavalent chromium to be a group 1 carcinogen, and in 2019, hexavalent chromium compounds were added to the list of toxic and harmful water pollutants.
Once this substance enters the body, it can cause skin irritation, various respiratory problems, as well as other health problems such as kidney and liver damage, lung cancer, and in serious cases, death. The Fukuyama City Environmental Protection Department said that the "cat that caused the accident" may have died, but also notified: "If citizens see an abnormal cat, please do not touch it and immediately contact the city government or the police."
