In May 2023, the famous musician Mr. Wu Shikai passed away in the capital Beijing at the age of 91. It is worth worrying that it has only been a year and a few months since the death of his beloved wife Ye Peiying.
This pair of golden boys and girls recognized by the art world have been baptized by vicissitudes of life all their lives, but they have always been in love and affectionately embraced through every stage. When he was dying, although Wu Lao's expression was gloomy and his eyes were moist, he still struggled to confide in his last wish in the company of his daughter Wu Yongxu: "I can't wait to be reunited with your mother...... I just hope that you will do it yourself, and don't let us hinder your future...... After all, we are all human beings, and the past is gone with the wind.
Hearing this, Wu Yongxu burst into tears, and his heart was mixed. She understands her father's expectations, but in the face of the great grief of the death of her parents, she can hardly accept it all.
For most of their later years, what Ye Peiying and Wu Shikai longed for most was to always have the company of their children and the warmth of family affection. Ye Peiying has spent most of her life working hard for her artistic career, although she has won countless honors and applause, she is always empty in her heart, and she is often attached to her daughter's family affection.
Whenever the festival is approaching, looking at the scene of the neighbors happy and reunited, Ye Peiying will feel extremely envious and longing. She looks forward to her daughter Wu Yongxu coming back often and accompanying her.
It's a pity that Wu Yongxu left home to study since he was a child, and when he grew up, he went to the United States and rarely returned to China to visit relatives.
Even so, Ye Peiying still trusts and supports her daughter 100% and regards her as the pearl of her palm. Even before she died, she was still whispering: "Ah Xu... Ah Xu... Mommy is here... Wu Yongxu later learned that her mother regarded her as the last shackle and sustenance in her life, so she was so reluctant to leave.
In the Chinese art world, Ye Peiying is simply a bright pearl. Since she was a teenager, she has been recognized by her teachers as a "natural singer", with a penetrating and infectious voice.
Therefore, she resolutely left Malaysia and returned to her homeland for further study, becoming a student of the Central Conservatory of Music.
At the beginning, due to the non-standard pronunciation of Mandarin, Ye Peiying was frustrated, and was even teased and ridiculed by her classmates. But she never gave up, locking herself in the classroom after school and practicing her Mandarin pronunciation in front of the mirror until she sweated and her throat ached.
In this way, after nearly two years of hard work, Ye Peiying finally became an excellent bel canto master. Since then, she has performed on stage frequently, and her well-honed voice has become even more unique and powerful.
Whether it is "The Singer Under the Iron Hoof", "Mei Niang Song", or "The Yellow River Resentment" in the "Yellow River Cantata" in the Great Hall of the People in 1965, Ye Peiying has conquered the audience with her very infectious artistic expression.
The most unforgettable thing is Ye Peiying's 43-year-long and more than 2,000 performances of the immortal masterpiece "I Love You China". Every time this far-reaching and high-pitched melody sounds, countless overseas Chinese travelers will burst into tears and be deeply moved.
It is said that another overseas Chinese from Indonesia has copied more than 800 audio tapes and spread them to relatives and friends around the world to share.
Although Ye Peiying later bloomed brilliantly on the art stage, the beginning of her life was due to ups and downs and tribulations.
In 1935, Ye Peiying was born in a small family in a slum in Malaysia, and the family once had a family of five, but her mother died early, leaving her father to raise three children alone.
In order to support her family, Ye Peiying has had to sell cigarettes on the street since she was a child. She and her two elder brothers often escaped from the frenzied pursuit of the Japanese army in the rain of bullets, and spent years of baptism of war.
It wasn't until the end of the war in 1945 that Yip's family was able to return to Malaysia and she was back in school. Unexpectedly, just when she had just regained some peaceful life, Ye Peiying was harassed by a British soldier and was almost injured.
After this battle, she made up her mind to make her own contribution to the motherland and the Chinese nation, and no longer be as dark as in the past.
In 1951, 16-year-old Ye Peiying returned to Guangdong alone to continue her studies. At first, life was difficult, and for a time, she was unable to successfully obtain high school status.
Fortunately, she performed well in a young singer competition in Guangzhou, and regained her confidence and courage to move forward.
With this determination, Ye Peiying was finally admitted to the High School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University, where she met her future husband Wu Shikai in the choir and started a new chapter in her life.
In the most critical years of Ye Peiying's life, there was such a person who accompanied her and cared for her meticulously, and that was Wu Shikai, who would become her husband in the future.
The fate between the two is quite fascinating: both are students of the Central Conservatory of Music, both have outstanding musical talents, and both have experienced and suffered the devastation of the "Cultural Revolution" movement.
We first met in a choir in middle school. At that time, Wu Shikai was deeply attracted by Ye Peiying's pure voice like Venus and became her most loyal "little follower".
Since then, he has brought some small gifts to Ye Peiying every week, such as fruit desserts. After graduating, the two became colleagues, working side by side on the road of art.
Who would have thought that the "Cultural Revolution" movement in 1966 was about to break out, and this tacit artist group would not escape the ravages of doom. For the so-called "ideological transformation", Wu Shikai was forcibly exiled to the countryside, while Ye Peiying was isolated and censored, and was severely beaten and framed for many years.
Once, even her unborn child was frightened in the womb, almost causing an irreparable tragedy.
Finally, after nine years of ordeal, they were finally able to return to the music hall, but they have missed the best age for parenting. It wasn't until 1972 that Wu Yongxu was born, and since then, the two artists have been burdened with the arduous burden of parenting, torn between working at home and working in the arts.
After the vicissitudes of life, now the two old people have passed away one after another. But what is gratifying is that they used their ordinary lives to compose an extraordinary ode to love, and interpreted "Jingwei Fill?? Love, gathering is a fire", which is worthy of being remembered and praised forever by the world.
Despite the ruthlessness of the years, the sound and color art of Ye Peiying and Wu Shikai is still young and has illuminated the hearts of countless people. Just a year before they passed away one after another, one night in 2022, 91-year-old Ye Peiying suddenly fainted at home.
The Central Conservatory of Music immediately rushed her to the hospital, but doctors diagnosed her with severe intracranial hemorrhage that caused brain herniation, and her condition was critical and she could not undergo surgery.
At 17:45 pm on April 7, Ye Peiying closed her eyes forever and left the world. Wu Shikai and his daughter Wu Yongxu solemnly and respectfully bid her farewell for the last journey at the farewell ceremony.
In the blink of an eye, late at night on May 1 of the following year, Wu Shikai also passed away, never imagined that the two artists would be so like-minded and work together to continue the fate of their previous lives.
Although their lives have passed away, their outstanding contributions to the vocal cause of the Chinese nation will forever be recorded in history.
