Since being elected head of the legislature on February 1, 2024, Han Kuo-yu's words and deeds have attracted much attention.
In this article, I would like to introduce what Han Kuo-yu has done recently from the following three points: first, Han Kuo-yu's meeting with Rosenberg; second, Han Kuo-yu's use of the expression "Taiwan region" to be attacked by the Green Battalion, and third, Han Kuo-yu's other news.
Two
The first is Han Kuo-yu's meeting with AIT Chairman Rosenberg.
On April 3, 2024, Han Kuo-yu met with AIT President Laura Rosenberg (see the woman who shook Han's hand in the photo below).
AIT is an abbreviation for American Institute in Taiwan, an organization set up by the U.S. Department of State. The actual affairs handled by the AIT Taipei Office are equivalent to the affairs of the U.S. Embassy, and the chairman of AIT is equivalent to the person in charge of foreign affairs of the United States in Taiwan.
Laura Rosenberg, born in 1983, is a senior advisor to the U.S. National Security Council and former director of the National Security Council's China and North Korea affairs, responsible for coordinating U.S. policy toward China and the Korean Peninsula, and is familiar with Northeast Asia and China, served as a foreign policy advisor to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and chief of staff to current Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and was elected chairman of the AIT in March 2023.
After Rosenberg took office, she will visit Taiwan five times in April, June, October 2023 and January and April 2024, focusing mainly on the 2024 Taiwan leadership election and the upcoming May 20, but during the visit to Taiwan, she will still meet with all kinds of heads.
In June 2023, Rosenberg met with then-head of the legislature, You Xikun, and in April 2024, Rosenberg met with Han Kuo-yu, the newly appointed head of the legislature. As for what Rosenberg talked about during his two meetings with the head of the legislature, we do not know, but from the external form, there are two differences between the two meetings:
First, the degree of exposure is not the same.
In June 2023, Rosenberg and You Xikun met, and the hiding was extremely low-key. The legislature did not issue a notice of the interview in advance, held closed meetings, refused media interviews, and asked participants not to relay the content of the meeting after the meeting, so as not to let the meeting get too much exposure, giving people the impression that they were secretly doing bad things.
In April 2024, Rosenberg and Han Kuo-yu met, and they were especially high-profile. The legislature issued a notice of the interview in advance and opened the speeches of both parties to the media for filming. I wonder if this is a reflection of Han Kuo-yu's open-minded style, or is AIT deliberately making this meeting more exposed?
The second is that the people who participated in the meeting were different.
In June 2023, Rosenberg went to the legislature, and people from all camps attended, and it was not the green camp that took the opportunity for dialogue alone, and in April 2024, Rosenberg went to the legislature, and only Han Kuo-yu attended.
Rosenberg is not very at ease with Lai Qingde, which is also the main reason for her frequent visits to Taiwan, this meeting with Han Yu, whether in terms of exposure or attendees, Rosenberg intends to highlight the importance of Han Kuo-yu, and it seems that he is also taking the opportunity to knock Lai Qingde.
Judging from the photos of the two shaking hands, Rosenberg smiled, Han Yu was calm and confident, and the scene was very harmonious.
Three
The second is that Han Kuo-yu used the expression "Taiwan region" to be attacked by the green camp.
On April 4, 2024, Han Kuo-yu posted on social platforms, with statements such as "Qingming tomb sweeping and ancestor worship in the mainland has a history of thousands of years" and "On the eve of the Qingming Festival, a serious earthquake occurred in Taiwan", which was immediately attacked by the green camp.
In response to the four words "Taiwan region," the green camp said that Han Kuo-yu was "echoing the mainland." The green camp is obviously making trouble unreasonably, and when it can't find Han Yu's mistake, it forcibly finds a "mistake" that is not a mistake, and wants to hit Han Yu.
It turned out that the green battalion itself made a "mistake" and miscalculated, and the effect was counterproductive.
Four
The third is other news from Han Kuo-yu.
On April 6, 2024, Han Kuo-yu said that he would donate his salary income since he took office as head of the legislature to help the Hualien earthquake.
I don't know the specific amount, of course, compared to the large amount of disaster relief funds of millions and billions, the salary is only a small amount, but when most people donate one month's salary, Han Yu donated more than two months' salary.
On April 8, 2024, Han Kuo-yu went to Mailiao Township, Yunlin County, that night to stand for Xu Zhihao, a candidate for mayor of Lanying Mailiao Township.
I'm gossiping here, Han Yu's wife Li Jiafen (the beauty in the picture above, the year of the photo is no longer available) is from Yunlin County, therefore, Han Yu is also half of Yunlin County, he went to Mailiao Township to help in the election, aside from his identity as a blue camp boss, he is actually contributing to his hometown.
On April 10, 2024, the "Taiwan Foundation for Democracy" held a board meeting, and Han Kuo-yu was absent and was still jointly elected as the chairman.
Why did Han Kuo-yu miss such an important board meeting? It is said that when Han Kuo-yu received the notice of the meeting, Han Kuo-yu's schedule for 10 April had already been decided.
We don't know the exact itinerary for Han Kuo-yu on April 10, 2023, but I can find out that he will go to Miaoli City, a subordinate city of Miaoli County (this is a township-level city in Taiwan, different from ours), on April 11, 2023, to run for the mayoral candidate of Lanying, where Han Kuo-yu will participate in the "pre-election solidarity night".
It can be seen that the event was held on the evening of April 11, and according to the traffic in Taiwan, as long as it is on the island, no matter from which corner, Han Kuo-yu can go to Miaoli City during the day on April 11, and he can come to the board meeting on April 10.
In my opinion, Han Kuo-yu's non-attendance at the board meeting is based on two considerations:
On the one hand, it is the inaction of the green camp that the board meeting that was originally to be held in March has not been held;
On the other hand, it is also setting rules for the foundation: the board meeting is not to be held when you want to, and you can open it when you want.
Both considerations are important, and Han has done a good job.
