The mainland stresses that the compatriots on both sides of the strait are Chinese, that both sides of the strait belong to the same country and one nation, and that the reunion of the family and the country cannot be stopped. Ma Ying-jeou responded that both sides of the strait belong to the Chinese nation and are descendants of Yan and Huang, and they should adhere to the "consensus of '92" and oppose "Taiwan independence."
It is worth noting that at this meeting, the mainland's top level mentioned "one country, two systems" and said that "differences in systems cannot change the objective fact that both sides of the strait belong to the same country and one nation." Ma Ying-jeou accepted this argument, saying that "although the two sides of the strait have developed under different systems," they are flesh and blood compatriots whose blood is thicker than water, and he also mentioned that the "consensus of '92" was reached in 1992, saying that both sides of the strait adhere to the "one China" principle.
It is not difficult to see from Ma Ying-jeou's statement that the main theme of this meeting is to seek "common ground." Looking back at the past, we share the same culture and history, and looking forward to the future, we have the common responsibility of realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Since the beginning of the year, the 14 February vicious fishing boat collision incident, the Taiwan military's revision of the definition of "first strike," the Kinmen live-fire training and Lai Ching-te's preparation to come to power have followed one after another; in the malicious provocations of the DPP authorities, the storm in the Taiwan Strait has not subsided and the situation has reached the brink of detonation; Ma Ying-jeou has come here holding high the banner of "seeking roots" and "peace." The mainland has given him the highest level of courtesy throughout the whole process, conveying his expectations for peace and stability, and he returned with the common aspirations of the compatriots on both sides of the strait for peace and the blessings and greetings of the mainland.
The Kuomintang is only one step away from winning in the current regional elections, and now that Ma Ying-jeou has won the mainland's high eye, the party's cross-strait line has naturally attracted even more attention, and it has launched a counteroffensive against the DPP while the "520" has not yet arrived. He first responded positively to the concerns of the island, praised Ma Ying-jeou's visit as a very important step in promoting peaceful exchanges between the two sides of the strait, and expressed his willingness to resolutely oppose "Taiwan independence" and hoped that the two sides of the strait could create a peaceful environment and create a win-win situation.
Immediately after that, he threw three questions at Lai Ching-te in succession: After he took office, should he choose to fight with the mainland or have exchanges? Should he choose dialogue or confrontation? Whether he wanted a win-win situation or a lose-lose situation? He warned Lai Ching-te that if the DPP insists on promoting "Taiwan independence," then the Taiwan people will suffer along with it.
Lai Qingde has recently been preparing for his assumption of office, and many members of Tsai Ing-wen's faction have been replaced, but what remains unchanged is that the new personnel layout still revolves around the theme of "Taiwan independence," which runs counter to the current mainstream public opinion on the island, but the DPP has ignored it and has been even more critical of Ma Ying-jeou's visit to the mainland.
On the night that the mainland's top level received Ma Ying-jeou, Taiwan's "Mainland Affairs Council" and foreign affairs department issued statements one after another, in which the former accused Ma Ying-jeou of failing to convey the so-called "proposition" for the DPP, refusing to recognize the "consensus of '92," and refusing to accept "one China." The latter realized that the dawn of peace brought by Ma Ying-jeou had an impact on the DPP's re-election, and also expressed the hope of resuming dialogue with the mainland to resolve contradictions and differences, but only under the condition of "reciprocity". Being able to utter such nonsense shows that the DPP has seriously misjudged the current cross-strait and international situation.
Not to mention that "Taiwan independence" cannot pass the threshold of international consensus, even the US-led extraterritorial forces cannot be relied upon. A few days ago, the two sides of the strait almost fell out because of the collision with the ship, and the United States dropped its chain at a critical moment, and the matter was silent, and US President Biden once again reiterated that he does not support "Taiwan independence" when he called the mainland's top officials a few days ago. The Taiwan issue is the first red line between China and the United States, and the US side knows this very well in its heart, so the US side is more afraid of "something happening in the Taiwan Strait" than the DPP, and it is better for Lai Qingde's "Taiwan independence" calculation to be stopped as soon as possible.
