After the renovation of "repairing the old as the old", the site of the century-old "Star Perfume Factory" in the North Bund area of Hongkou has been rejuvenated and has become an art exhibition space that brings rich cultural life to the general public.
On April 7th, artist Huang Wei's solo exhibition "Tempering" opened here, hosted by Shanghai China Central Place, focusing on 18 wonderful works, which are open to the public free of charge, exploring a new path for the revitalization and utilization of historical buildings and urban renewal.
Shanghai China Central Place is a major project in Shanghai, which started construction at the end of December last year, with a project scale of about 200,000 square meters, and will be composed of a 180-meter-high international headquarters office building, a number of open landscape plazas and 30 buildings with historical and cultural features, including the former "Star Perfume Factory" site.

In 1907, Zhou Bangjun, a pharmacist at Shanghai Chinese and Western Pharmacy, made a new type of toilet water with reference to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Around 1929, Zhou Bangjun's eldest daughter Zhou Wenji took over, and then opened the "Star Perfume Soap Factory" here, and "Star Flower Water" was its star product, which was once known as the "Oriental Chanel", and also became the city's memory and historical context.
"In the spirit of 'being responsible for the city, society and history', we have renovated and renovated this historic building. The cracked parts are reinforced with flat steel hoop welding, from slag removal, alkali removal, powder adjustment to joints, and the brick wall is repaired with 'embroidery needle work', so that it can be kept in its original state as much as possible, and at the same time assume new urban functions. The renovated site of the "Star Perfume Factory" not only retains the old style, but also naturally blends into the background of modern commerce. The first floor of the original building factory introduces the future commercial planning of the plot, and the second floor is an art exhibition space.

"Whetstone" partial work
After graduating from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts with a bachelor's degree, artist Huang Wei chose to go to Tibet University for further study, and spent three years in Tibet to get in touch with Tibetan art traditions, spending a lot of time studying the unique "dot dyeing" technique in Tibetan thangka, integrating it with the Han Chinese painting and calligraphy tradition studied since childhood, and opening up a unique creative technique with contemporary concepts.
Among the 18 works on display, a considerable part of them belong to the artist's "Jingjin" series of creations, through countless dot dyeing, color application to present images, some of the works took half a year or even a year to complete, hundreds of thousands of dot matrix, skimming, converged into a rushing and quiet turbulence, to the audience impressed.
The head of the curatorial team, Daigo Art, said that after the previous solo exhibitions in Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and other places, this exhibition at the North Bund is the most complete collection of the artist's works in recent years.
It is reported that the exhibition will last until May 21, and the public can make an appointment to visit for free.
