Recently, the National Immigration Department of Thailand hosted a working meeting on the convenience and safety of entry and exit during the Songkran Festival. The Second Directorate of Immigration is responsible for overseeing immigration at 5 airports, including Suvarnabhumi Airport, Don Mueang Airport, Phuket Airport, Chiang Mai Airport and Hat Yai Airport. The meeting invited senior executives from relevant institutions and airlines to join and listen.
The Second Sub-Directorate of the Immigration Bureau has made major arrangements for the work during the Songkran Festival from now until April 30 to ensure the convenience and safety of tourists, and has made 5 countermeasures for the peak flight period:
1. Increase staffing: Mobilize airport immigration personnel and police to solve the problem of manpower shortage. More than 100 additional personnel will be added to the immigration checkpoints at major airports to carry out inspections, and the authorities will be requested to cooperate with them not to ask for leave to speed up the inspection and release of passengers.
2. Reduce the number of screening steps: Reduce unnecessary procedures, such as eliminating the steps of scanning faces and fingerprints for Thai citizens, eliminating the scanning of seat cards, eliminating the use of exit automatic entry machines for foreign travelers to stamp, and simplifying the border crossing process and the official process. These measures will help reduce the inspection process, which used to take 45 seconds, to 20 seconds.
3. Technical measures: The staff of the Migration Technology Center is on duty to monitor the immigration system and prevent interference.
4. Security measures: The Second Directorate of the Immigration Department will be responsible for implementing security measures to prevent tourists posing as various high-risk groups, especially criminal gangs such as Vietnam and Colombia, as well as conflict ethnic groups that may come to commit crimes during this period. These measures are designed to ensure the safety of visitors during Songkran.
5. Cooperate with surrounding units: Cooperate with surrounding units such as airline groups to solve the urgent problem of aircraft failure and unable to take off, and provide assistance to passengers who must use fast track or priority lane (such as people with disabilities, children, etc.).
Lieutenant General Yi Tipeng stressed that the Second Immigration Branch must comply with the above plans and measures, especially during the peak flight period during the Songkran Festival in April. It is expected that about 120,000 international passengers will arrive and depart every day, with a maximum of about 25 flights taking off and landing per hour, so there will be about 4,000-5,000 passengers per hour per day.
