The tannery has touched a "red line" and has been ordered to close

In India, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has ordered the closure of a tannery in Vaniyambadi after discovering that the plant was illegally discharging sewage.

TNPCB officers found multiple underground pipes during a raid that led from the tannery to the Palar River.

The Waseem Hasan Tannery was also found to have operated without a valid authorization under the Hazardous Waste Management Regulations and in violation of the relevant provisions of India's Water Act and Air Act.

The tannery is authorized to collect wastewater from 134 tanneries in the Vaniyambadi-Ambur area and treat it at its on-site Central Sewage Treatment Plant (CETP).

However, TNPCB officials found that the Sewage Treatment Plant (CETP) had failed and the wastewater was being dumped directly into the river.

As a result, the tannery's power supply was cut off, and officials warned that tough action would be taken against other tanneries that illegally discharge sewage into the river.
