The mainland taxis are all BYD, and the Hong Kong taxis are all Tesla

author:Hong Kong Economic Herald Press

Recently, the newly launched Xiaomi SU7 in the mainland has made a lot of consumers enthusiastic, so in Hong Kong, what car will Hong Kong people choose? Today, Xiaobian will stand in the perspective of online car-hailing to discuss with you, which brand in the mainland or Hong Kong has a higher market share?

The king of online car-hailing in the mainland - BYD, the "price butcher".

In the past two years, everyone will find that the online car-hailing in the mainland is basically BYD, GAC Aion, Tesla, BAIC New Energy, Changan, Geely and other electric vehicles. Xiaobian believes that the reason is actually very simple, because the driving cost of electric vehicles is very cheap, and the electricity cost of 100 kilometers is about 16.8-27 yuan, while the fuel cost of 100 kilometers of different brands of fuel vehicles with different displacements is about 45-68 yuan. Regardless of distance, the cost advantage of electric vehicles is especially evident at this moment, as consumers pay attention to the cost-effectiveness of ride-hailing, the competition among major ride-hailing platforms is fierce, and the trend of rising oil prices.

Speaking of which, we must talk about BYD, the most ruthless "price butcher" in the car industry.

Why is it a "price butcher"? The editor summarizes that BYD not only rolls others, but also rolls itself. In December last year, BYD Qin PLUS lowered the starting price to 89,800 yuan by cutting prices by 10,000 yuan, helping BYD Card Point to complete the established goal of annual sales of 3 million vehicles, with a cumulative sales volume of 3,024,400 units in 2023.

On the occasion of hitting the new target of annual sales of 4 million vehicles in 2024, the "price reduction rule" was once again offered by Wang Chuanfu. From February 19th to March 1st, in just 12 days, Wang Chuanfu launched the Glory Edition to collectively reduce the price of eight main models such as Qin PLUS, Han, Tang, Song PLUS, Song Pro, Seal, Dolphin, and Destroyer 05, which also set off the first round of price war in the car industry in 2024.

In addition, the editor believes that BYD's cooperation with Didi is also one of the important reasons why BYD has become the king of online car-hailing in the mainland.

In October 2020, Didi unveiled its first customized ride-hailing car D1 in Beijing, which was jointly built by Didi and BYD and is the product of the Torrent Alliance. D1 as a test of the water, Didi successfully used the accumulated numbers to penetrate into the automotive industry chain in a customized way.

It is reported that to this end, Didi and BYD also established a joint venture company called Meihao Travel (Hangzhou) Automobile Technology Co., Ltd., BYD and Didi invested 835 million yuan and 449 million yuan respectively, holding 65% and 35% of the shares respectively.

It should be said that in recent years, with the deep integration of new energy vehicles and technology genes, more and more smart cars have been emerging, and both new forces and traditional car companies have almost regarded the online car-hailing market as an important sales channel, while Didi is using its own accumulated big data to build online car-hailing to meet the needs of the transformation of the automobile industry.

Half of Hong Kong is occupied by Tesla

In recent years, it is not only the outbreak of the mainland electric vehicle market, but also the dividend period of the outbreak of the Hong Kong electric vehicle market, in Hong Kong's new private cars, electric vehicles account for more than 60%, and such an incremental market is basically monopolized by Tesla.

It is reported that in Hong Kong, the Model Y RWD is the best-selling with 9,806 registrations, the Model Y long-range version ranks second with 9,104 registrations, and the Model 3 long-range version ranks third with 6,028 registrations. These three models are not only the top three registrations of Tesla in Hong Kong, but also the top three of the entire electric private car registrations.

In fact, the editor believes that one of the primary reasons why Tesla can occupy half of the Hong Kong car industry is that it entered the game early. It is reported that Tesla set up an office in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong in 2010 and a service center of about 280 square meters in 2011, taking Hong Kong as an important target market. According to the Hong Kong Electric Vehicle Database, the total number of first-time registered electric private cars in Hong Kong in the seven years from 2017 to 2023 is 62,458. Among them, Tesla has 33,909 vehicles, not only beating other brands to win the first place, but also accounting for 54.3%. In other words, for every two electric cars sold in Hong Kong, one of them is Tesla. It is no exaggeration to say that Tesla is everywhere you look on the streets of Hong Kong.

In addition, on December 14 last year, it was reported that Tesla had partnered with Uber, a ride-hailing app commonly used in Hong Kong, to offer electric vehicles directly to drivers with discounts of up to $3,000 (currently about 21,500 yuan).

In fact, back in 2020, car rental giant Hertz ordered 100,000 Tesla Model 3s, and subsequently, Hertz offered its drivers the opportunity to use these cars through a partnership with Uber. Now Tesla and Uber have reached an agreement to upgrade the partnership to sell new cars directly to Uber drivers without having to use Hertz. Uber's "car marketplace" offers drivers the opportunity to buy new or used cars at a discounted price, and through this new agreement, Tesla has become a "partner" of this platform. Depending on the driver's rating, Tesla will offer discounts on the Model 3 and Model Y, the amount of which depends on the driver's rating, up to $30,000.

However, under the current situation of extreme involution in the industry, Xiaobian believes that many mainland independent brands have moved their attention to Hong Kong, because Hong Kong has a suitable soil for the growth of electric vehicles, and in the future, Tesla wants to continue to dominate the Hong Kong electric vehicle market, I am afraid it will not be easy.
