Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by monkeypox virus infection, which has historically occurred mainly in Central and West Africa.

Currently, monkeypox has spread from person to person and is spreading widely outside of Africa.

From January 1, 2022 to February 29/2023,

A total of 94,707 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been reported from 117 countries/territories around the world, and a total of 181 deaths have been reported from 28 countries/territories.

The top three countries in the world in terms of cumulative confirmed cases are: the United States, Brazil and Spain.

The top three countries in the world in terms of cumulative deaths are: the United States, Mexico and Peru.

In February 2024, a total of 715 new cases were reported from 29 countries around the world (historical data corrected).

There were 2 new deaths, one in Austria and one in Portugal.

Note 1: China information includes Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. The cumulative number of cases is: 1,611 cases in mainland China, 83 cases in Hong Kong, 335 cases in Taiwan, and 2 cases in Macau.

Note 2: On October 18, 2023, the official website of the World Health Organization announced that "starting from this month, the global monkeypox outbreak information will be changed from the original weekly report to a monthly report".
