GTC24 | Three startups are leading climate AI innovation with NVIDIA AI and the Earth-2 platform

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing humanity, and to mitigate its impacts, researchers are turning to AI and sustainable computing to accelerate their work into action.

At this year's NVIDIA GTC Global AI Extravaganza, startups, corporates, and scientists highlighted their environmentally sustainable initiatives and latest climate innovations. Many of them are using NVIDIA Earth-2, a full-stack, open platform for accelerating climate and weather simulations and predictions.

Earth-2 includes GPU acceleration for numerical weather and climate prediction models such as ICON and IFS, state-of-the-art AI-powered weather models such as FourCastNet, GraphCast, and Deep Learning Weather Prediction integrated into the NVIDIA Modulus framework, and large-scale, interactive, high-resolution data visualization and simulation powered by the NVIDIA Omniverse platform. These features can also be accessed through cloud APIs.

Members of the NVIDIA Inception Program, a free, global program for talented startups, are leading the way in climate AI with Earth-2. This work is critical because extreme weather events are expected to claim 1 million lives and cost $1.7 trillion annually by 2050.

Tomorrow.io Contribute to future weather forecasting

Boston-based Tomorrow.io provides countries, businesses, and individuals with weather-relevant, actionable insights by applying advanced AI and machine learning models to proprietary global datasets collected from satellites, radars, and other sensors. Its weather intelligence and climate adaptation platform provides high-resolution, accurate, high-resolution weather forecasts across time zones, as well as short- and long-term forecasts.

The startup is using Earth-2 to study the potential impact of its satellite suite on global model predictions. Tomorrow.io Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSE) using the Earth-2 AI forecasting model to determine the optimal configuration of satellites and other instruments to improve weather forecasting conditions. The ultimate goal of this effort is to provide users with precise information and simplify their work, helping them to gain a clear understanding of complex weather conditions and make the right operational decisions at the right time.

ClimaSens leverages AI to optimize flood risk management

ClimaSens, based in Melbourne and New York, Australia, uses advanced AI models to fuse historical, real-time and future climate and weather information. FloodSens is the company's upcoming flood risk analysis model that informs users of the probability of rainfall flooding and provides high-resolution assessments of flash floods, river floods, and everything in between.

FloodSens, which is currently in beta, is based on the Earth-2 API and FourCastNet model to provide a high-fidelity and accurate representation of future weather conditions. In addition, it can be used as a collection with other models to assess the probability of low-probability, high-impact flood events. The startup is committed to creating a more resilient and sustainable future for the world.

North.io Gain insight into the ocean with AI and accelerated simulations

north.io, based in Kiel, Germany, is helping to map the planet's largest carbon sink, the ocean. The ocean floor (the bulk of the ocean) is an important source of renewable energy and food security for the world, but only about 25% of it has been mapped to date.

North.io is collecting and analyzing vast amounts of data fed back from autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and enabling global users to access, share, visualize, and understand this data through its TrueOcean platform.

In addition, North.io is using the Earth-2 API to develop AI weather forecasts for intelligent operational planning, system management, and risk assessment for its AUVs. The combination of high-precision weather simulations and autonomous systems significantly reduces the safety risks to humans in harsh offshore environments.
