Make the best use of water – protect water and keep life flowing

author:Phoenix Rally

In March, it is the annual World Water Day on March 22. It has been 32 years since World Water Day was officially established on 18 January 1993 by the United Nations through the 17th General Assembly Resolution 193. Since 1994, the mainland has designated March 22 to 28 as "China Water Week" every year to actively respond to the theme of "World Water Day".

There are profound reasons why most countries in the world, including China, attach so much importance to the use and protection of water resources? According to statistics, about 3.5 million people die globally every year due to inadequate water supply and water pollution, including a large number of underage children. This is one of the important reasons why the United Nations established World Water Day.

The mainland, in particular, is also a country with severe water shortages, with only 2,200 cubic meters of water per capita, accounting for about one-tenth of the world average. At present, more than half of the more than 600 cities on the mainland are short of water, of which 108 are seriously short of water, making it one of the 13 countries with the poorest per capita water resources in the world.

Therefore, in the face of bare rivers, cracked fields, and the people who are seriously lacking drinking water, after the founding of New China, it put forward a grand plan of "south-to-north water diversion" with great foresight. Since then, after several generations of efforts, more than 1,000 kilometers of waterways have been successfully opened up in a straight line, and the eastern and central routes have been successfully put into use.

On March 14, 2014, the mainland once again put forward the idea of "giving priority to water conservation, spatial balance, systematic governance, and working with both hands", which provides a fundamental guide and action guide for systematically solving the water problems faced by the mainland in the historical accumulation and the new era, and ensuring national water security. In the 10 years since, the mainland has made historic achievements in water control. This is inseparable from the firm belief of the people who control the water, and even more inseparable from the efforts of generations of Chinese sons and daughters.

Therefore, each of us should establish a sense of water conservation in our daily life and work, get rid of the bad habit of waste, and cherish the hard-won water resources.

For example, drip water can be used for multiple purposes: after washing water, you can mop the floor and then flush the toilet, and a large bucket should be prepared at home to collect domestic wastewater such as laundry to cope with the need for emergencies, so that a family of three can save about 1 ton of water per month.

Washing dishes and chopsticks with rice washing water and boiling water can save domestic water and reduce the pollution of dishes by dish soap, and develop a good habit of turning off the faucet tightly.

When washing your hands, face, and teeth, turn on the faucet intermittently as needed. Try to shorten the amount of time you take a shower each day. When taking a shower, you can use a bucket of water before waiting for the cold water to heat up, so that it can be used to flush the toilet for other purposes, etc.

Frugality and simplicity are the virtues of man; extravagance and magnificence are the great evils of man. Without water, the earth would dry up, and without water, there would be no beautiful world, let alone a better future.

Finally, we sincerely appeal to everyone to cherish water resources and protect the water of life. Not only on World Water Day and China Water Week, but every day of our lives, we should cherish every drop of water and cherish the water of life with practical actions.
