Why are children so cruel?

A junior high school student in Handan, Hebei Province, was killed by three male classmates and buried in a vegetable greenhouse after being bullied on campus. After this vicious incident, a major focus of public opinion is undoubtedly: The three murderers are all minors, but they committed such a terrible felony, how should these "little devils" be punished?

If you look at the surging crowds on the Internet, you will find that many people advocate severe punishment, "You can kill people at such a young age, and you can pay it back when you grow up?" Some people are dissatisfied that the current law on the protection of minors has become a gold medal for murderers to avoid death: the law of previous dynasties stipulates that the period of absolute criminal responsibility under the age of 7 is still in force, and the "Juvenile Offenders Ordinance" in Hong Kong is still in use, but article 17 of the domestic criminal law sets the age of 14 years old.

The solution to the problem is actually very simple, juvenile crimes, the guardian not only needs to substitute the punishment, but also deprives the guardian of the right because of education. Two guardians, whoever has the surname will be punished.

In this way, it will not only solve the problem of juvenile delinquency, but also improve the sex ratio at birth and reduce the proportion of fathers and fathers.

This suggestion has been applauded by some as being useful, but it can be quite dangerous in practice and bring new and unforeseen problems. Because this line of thinking is, in the final analysis, a copy of the "one-long system": if something happens at home, only the parents ask, and the result is bound to make the guardians strengthen the discipline of minors, and try their best to stifle the signs of "disobedience" in the cradle. Regardless of the starting point, this is bound to be detrimental to the rights and interests of the child.

Of course, the rise in demand for severe punishment is also motivated by the fear of reality, because in recent years, there seems to be a trend towards younger age in some vicious cases: a 12-year-old sixth-grade boy in Hunan killed his mother with a knife in 2018, a boy under the age of 14 killed a 10-year-old girl in Dalian in 2019, and a boy under the age of 12 in Jingzhou, Hubei Province, pushed a four-and-a-half-year-old girl into a manure pit and died last summer.

For Chinese who are accustomed to "killing to pay for their lives", the most unacceptable thing is that the murderer can get away with it just because he is not old: in the above cases, just because the murderer is less than 14 years old, he often does not file a case, and even goes to school as usual afterwards. A boy under the age of 14 in Hengyang, Hunan Province, who was 23 days short, threw an 11-year-old girl into the Xiangjiang River, and threatened: "I don't have to go to prison for murder!"

Some people even feel that sentencing the murderer to life imprisonment is a waste of taxpayers' money, and it is better to simply eliminate it physically, otherwise the thought that such a person can be released from prison one day makes me feel creepy.

Simply killing the murderer will not solve the problem, and only by fully understanding the social causes behind such cases can we better prevent and reduce these unfortunate incidents. Every time such a tragedy occurs, one of the big questions that lingers in the minds of the public is, "Why are children so cruel?"

In the general imagination, the "child" should be an "innocent and pure" group, far from the filth of the adult world, or at least "undefiled". The premise of this concept is that "human nature is inherently good", and it is believed that as long as you keep your original intention, you can always be kind, but the reality may be even more ruthless.

Tang Degang lamented in his book "Seventy Years of the Late Qing Dynasty" that during the Tianjing Incident, "the most brutal murderers were the Boy Scouts of the Taiping Army" and that "among all the revolutionary rebel groups, among them, the young children were the most fierce, loyal, powerful, and cruel."

Indeed, child soldiers from Burma to Africa are known for their brutality, and their viciousness is greater than that of adults. In fact, Li Kui, the most cruel and murderous Li Kui in "Water Margin", is also like a giant baby in many ways. Both naïve and murderous, this may seem contradictory, but why?

The Nobel Prize-winning animal behaviorist Conrad Lorenzo points out a common phenomenon in Aggression and Human Nature: "Among the fish that are as colourful as advertisements, the younger ones are almost more colourful, more ferocious, and more determined than the adults to attack the owners of the territory." ”

He proposes an explanation: in order for the species to survive and reproduce, aggression must be suppressed within the species, otherwise if the wolves bite each other, the population will die out in the process of evolution, and the more ferocious the animal, the more this inhibition mechanism is needed (the so-called "tiger poison does not eat children"), otherwise it is too dangerous; however, humans themselves are not born with sharp claws like tiger wolves, which requires the development of a set of cultural mechanisms to inhibit cannibalism.

If this logic is followed, then children are not "born good", on the contrary, they need to be fully socialized to control their innate aggression - children are cruel precisely because they are neither light nor serious, and they do not know the consequences of their actions as well as adults.

I understood this when I had children. Xiao Mao has been very gentle since he was a child, and when he was in kindergarten preschool, a girl liked him very much, and when asked by parents why, she said: "Because he is the only one who doesn't beat people indiscriminately." However, those boys who "beat people indiscriminately" are not inherently stubborn, but they don't know how to control their behavior and express themselves appropriately. There is a little boy who also likes Xiao Mao, but the way he expresses his liking is to hug Xiao Mao tightly, and even hit him, and when he does it, he is not serious, and the result is that Xiao Mao runs away when he sees him.

How to control one's own power without harming others and not suppressing oneself is a challenge for anyone, and it also requires a long upbringing, and it takes a long time to go through such a socialization process in order to eventually become a civilized person. Unfortunately, in this day and age, this is missing from the growing up of many children.

In the "Handan Junior High School Student Murder Case", the three murderers were all left-behind children. The 12-year-old Hunan boy who killed his mother with a knife was also a left-behind child, and the reason why he killed his mother was that his mother came back from work and found that he was poor in school, and beat and scolded him in a rage.

Of course, this is not to say that left-behind children have problems, but there is no doubt that not being around their parents for a long time and being nourished by love and attachment is extremely detrimental to the growth of children. This means that they are not adequately informed about what is the right thing to do, and they find it difficult to empathize with others, and they can only grope around on their own. Although some people have made it through on their own (many of my friends are), it is conceivable that some children will lose their way and go further and further down the wrong path.

If this is the case, then I believe that the cruelty shown in the children in these events is not inherently evil, but the result of their lack of education and guidance. Parents are not around, even when they come and go home, they only ask about their studies and don't care about their hearts, and school life is more boring and strict, for some boys who don't know how to deal with their emotions and aggression at all, bullying the weak has become a channel for them to vent until they do terrible things.

Left-behind children were originally the product of the dual separation system between urban and rural areas, otherwise parents would have been able to take their children with them to study nearby. This is an artificially created family segregation, and whether it is based on educational resources or controlling population movements, the result is that countless migrant families have suffered trauma and eventually borne bitter fruits.

There should be no more left-behind children. While this social solution may not solve the problem once and for all, we should at least confront the root causes of tragedy before more tragedies occur.
