Of course, fierce market competition is not a bad thing at any time. For the industry itself, this means faster technology iteration, and it also means that brands with insufficient product power will be more likely to be eliminated. From the consumer's point of view, fierce competition inevitably means that new products can now be bought that are much better and more cost-effective than in the past.

However, as we have mentioned many times before, "more cost-effective" does not always mean that the corresponding product can only be reduced in price for promotion. In fact, this has been particularly evident in recent years. In the context of increasingly fierce competition and the increasing demand for "differentiation" between products, almost all leading manufacturers will choose to give priority to improving the configuration, especially through exclusive or self-developed technologies and processes to create product selling points that are more difficult to imitate.

And this strategy of "prioritizing configuration upgrades, rather than price reductions" will naturally have a profound impact on the design concept of smartphones in the past year.

Today, let's start with the appearance of smartphones, and gradually analyze the changes that have taken place in the smartphone industry in the past year.

The flagship machine abandons the curved screen, and it has become a premium weapon for mid-range products

The first thing to mention is a small change in the shape of the smartphone screen. That's right, friends who pay attention to the history of the mobile phone industry estimate that they have found that in the past two or three years, the "large curved screen" on the flagship machine has become more and more rare.

Some of the new flagships are now starting to re-emphasize the straight-edge aesthetic, and they will use a fully straight-edged middle frame with a flat screen, thus forming an "angular and angular" styling style.

Another part of the flagship machine has chosen to regain the "2.5D" design. Domestic screens are accumulated, but at the same time, we must also be wary of digital marketing

In addition to the "role change" of curved screens in the mobile phone industry, the rise of "domestic screens" is obviously also a major topic after counting the mobile phone screen-related trends in 2023. And compared with previous years, the "role" of domestic screen factories in the mobile phone industry can also be said to have changed a lot.

On the one hand, in terms of the frequency of technology iteration, domestic screen factories will obviously break the stereotype of "one generation a year" in the industry in 2023, and achieve a higher frequency of technological progress. For example, BOE has successively brought a number of different screen solutions such as Q9, Q9+, X1, S1 and other key parameters such as vivo last year, Red Devil, OPPO, realme and so on, and has achieved multiple iterations on multiple key parameters such as brightness, color gamut, and dimming frequency.

On the one hand, in many cases, relevant manufacturers fix a year before updating a new generation of products, not necessarily because they only develop one generation a year, but more deliberately arranged for commercial interests. On the other hand, when domestic screen factories achieve technological breakthroughs, they will naturally become very motivated to quickly update their products in order to better establish their image and seize the market.

On the other hand, this is also because the image design ideas of smartphones, especially high-end models, have gradually shifted from the simple pursuit of "outsole" to the direction of emphasizing dynamic range and color expression in the past year. The new batch of sensors represented by Samsung HP2, Sony LYT900, and Haowei OV50H can now record a brightness and color range equivalent to dozens of times that of the past, and in order to correctly reproduce these photos on the mobile phone screen, it is natural to need a new screen panel with a wider brightness range and deeper color depth than in the past.

However, it should be noted that although we admit that the current new mobile phone screen has indeed made great progress and is very fast, according to the data released by relevant manufacturers, not all of these new screens are "worthy of the name". Especially when it's in the sun, in a game, or when playing HDR movies, not all screens can achieve the highest peak brightness that they claim.

In other words, it may not be possible to rank different brands of panels directly by their claimed peak brightness in terms of quality or technology generation. Obviously, there's some "numbers game" that doesn't have to be pleasant, marketing.

Titanium is expensive and good, but there are still disagreements on how to use it well

After talking about the screen, let's talk about the case of the phone, or the middle frame. As we all know, there are three main options for the middle frame material of smartphones, excluding the lowest-end plastic, and the rest are stainless steel and high-strength aluminum.

The advantages of stainless steel are high strength, good surface texture, and bump resistance, but the disadvantage is that it is too heavy. Aluminum, on the other hand, is light and easy to process, but because it is too soft, it is less resistant to bumps and bends.

Because of this, in 2023, several brands, including Apple, Xiaomi, and Samsung, will begin to use titanium alloy middle frame material solutions on some of their models.

The benefits of titanium alloy are actually obvious, it is lighter than aluminum, and at the same time has the strength of stainless steel, plus titanium has many science fiction works and high-tech gimmicks, so for the vast majority of consumers, titanium middle frame can bring a "new and strange" experience.

But titanium also has some unique drawbacks, such as the fact that it is very expensive, which makes almost all manufacturers only use it on their highest-end models. Moreover, titanium is relatively easy to be stained with fingerprints, and the coloring process is relatively complex, which limits the visual and tactile effects that can be presented by the frame of this material. To put it more bluntly, it is difficult for titanium to make "differences" in color and texture, which may lead to the homogenization of products.

However, what is interesting is that from the current products, it seems that different manufacturers have shown completely different ideas in giving full play to the characteristics of this material. For example, Apple's iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max obviously use the titanium alloy middle frame to achieve the "weight reduction" of the fuselage, but the new titanium middle frame of Xiaomi and Samsung is not lighter than the models that do not use this material.

Obviously, titanium itself cannot be extra heavy. So the reasonable explanation may be that some manufacturers have consciously stuffed more battery capacity, larger camera modules, or other hidden additional hardware modules into this type of model. In fact, this means that they are still "taking advantage of" the lightweight properties of titanium, but in a different direction.

"High-end design" is devolved, which is definitely not a bad thing

Having talked so much about the exterior design of flagship phones in 2023, let's talk about the situation of non-flagship phones.

On the one hand, as we have already said before, in the past year we have seen the emergence of more and more "non-flagship" machines that are thin and light and equipped with curved screens. In this case, it is clear that the "high-end design" of mid-range products is no longer just a simple marketing gimmick, or a specialized design to cater to the needs of some consumers.

After all, on the one hand, we've long called for "non-flagship" phones that shouldn't be performance-oriented, with limited budgets and no gaming at all, but consumers who want a good imaging experience are no exception.

On the other hand, even from the perspective of "budget-sufficient" consumers, when mid-range and even low-end products begin to use a variety of "flagship technology" and "high-end materials", this will actually prompt the real top-of-the-line flagship phones to carry out new research and development work in order to further differentiate. As a result, this may also inject new impetus into the overall design of the mobile phone industry.
