IT Home reported on February 6 that like the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra also uses a titanium alloy frame to improve the durability and lightweight of the phone. However, the titanium alloy content and quality of the two phones are not the same. JerryRigEverything, a well-known Youtube tech channel, has revealed the mystery through a fire test.

Previously, JerryRigEverything had already done the same test on the iPhone 15 Pro Max and found that its titanium frame remained intact despite the high temperatures. This is not surprising, as the furnace used in the test was not hot enough to melt the titanium alloy.

IT Home noticed that the Galaxy S24 Ultra was put to the same test. Like the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the Galaxy S24 Ultra isn't made entirely of titanium, otherwise it would be too costly.

An XRF scanner revealed that the Galaxy S24 Ultra uses grade 2 titanium alloy on the outside of the frame and 6061 aluminum alloy on the inside, with a layer of plastic in between. In contrast, the exterior frame of the iPhone 15 Pro Max uses a grade 5 titanium alloy that is more rigid.

The testers were able to extract titanium from the Galaxy S24 Ultra and speculated that the two flagship phones from Samsung and Apple could use about the same amount of titanium. However, Nelson estimates that the titanium alloy used in the iPhone 15 Pro Max is worth around $10 to $15, while the S24 Ultra is only $3 to $5. Of course, after processing processes such as casting and molding, the actual cost will be higher.

All in all, the titanium casings of the Galaxy S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max are more decorative than structural. Still, Apple's special process and higher quality titanium alloy may give the iPhone 15 Pro Max a slight edge over durability.
