Live broadcast on February 3 The 36-year-old former Belgium international Marouane Fellaini announced his retirement on his personal social media, ending his 18-year career.

Fellaini wrote emotionally

I am writing this news to announce that after an 18-year career, I will be retiring from professional football.

It all started 18 years ago, it felt like yesterday in my mind, my first game as a child, training non-stop with my father, my first time in Standard Liege, my first selection for the Belgian national team. Time flies!

What an incredible journey! I am so grateful to be able to participate in the sport I love at the highest level. I am proud to represent Standard Liège in Belgium, Everton and Manchester United in the UK, and Shandong Taishan in China. I had the honour of playing for Belgium at the 2008 Olympics, Euro 2016 and the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.

I've played in front of the best fans in the world and I want to thank them for supporting me throughout my career. Your encouragement and passion have always been a source of inspiration for me.

None of this would have been possible without the involvement of my family, teammates, coaches, advisors, and others. Your love, guidance, support, and friendship are precious. Thank you!

As I turn the page on a new chapter in my life, I look forward to new challenges, but rest assured that I will continue to support this beautiful sport in any way possible.
