Samsung's dominance in the folding screen market was ended by Chinese manufacturers!

On January 31, it was reported that recently, Display Supply Chain Consultant (DSCC), a display supply chain consulting company, released a survey report pointing out that there have been major changes in the foldable panel market in the fourth quarter of 2023 (10-12 months), BOE ended the dominance of Samsung Display, and the shipment volume surpassed Samsung Display for the first time. In addition, in terms of the purchase volume of folding panels, Huawei has also surpassed Samsung.

DSCC pointed out that since Samsung Display entered the folding panel market in the third quarter of 2019, it has ranked first in shipments in all quarters except the first quarter of 2021. Similarly, since Samsung entered the folding screen mobile phone market in the third quarter of 2019, it has also ranked first in panel purchases in all quarters. However, Samsung's consecutive dominance records were all ended by Chinese manufacturers in the fourth quarter of 2023.

DSCC said that due to the sales of Samsung's folding screen mobile phone Galaxy Z Flip 5/Z Fold 5 were not as expected, resulting in a large increase in panel inventory, which dragged down Samsung's Display folding panel shipments, and the market share of shipments halved from 76% in the third quarter of 2023 to 36% in the fourth quarter of 2023, and the market share hit a new low quarter since the first quarter of 2021. In contrast, BOE's folding panel shipment market share in the fourth quarter of 2023 soared from 16% in the third quarter of 2023 to 42%, surpassing Samsung Display.

In addition, the market share of China's other three folding screen suppliers, Visionox, Huaxing Optoelectronics, and Tianma, has also increased significantly in the fourth quarter of 2023, of which Visionox's share is close to 15%.

In terms of folding panel purchases, Huawei benefited from the continued best-selling Mate X5 series, with its folding panel purchases soaring by 122% in the fourth quarter of 2023 (compared to the third quarter of 2023), and the market share of the purchase volume soared from less than 10% in the third quarter of 2023 to about 31% in the fourth quarter of 2023, surpassing Samsung and ranking first.

According to data from BCI, another market research agency, in the fourth quarter of 2023, Huawei ranked first in domestic sales with a 51.23% share in China's folding screen mobile phone market. Honor and Samsung ranked second and third with a share of 15.54% and 15.23%, respectively. It was followed by Oppo (11.48%), vivo (4.02%) and Xiaomi (2.50%).

In terms of the best-selling folding screen models in China in the fourth quarter of 2023, Huawei Mate X5 has won nearly 30% of the market share, accounting for 52.37% of the large-size folding screen category.

According to industry sources, the folding screen of Huawei Mate X5 is supplied by BOE and Visionox, while the folding screen suppliers of Honor's main folding screen model Magic V2 series and OPPO's main folding screen model Find N3 are BOE.

Obviously, the continuous development of domestic smartphone brand manufacturers in the folding screen market, as well as the vigorous adoption of domestic folding screens, are the key to promoting BOE's folding screen shipments to surpass Samsung Display.

According to a Counterpoint research report, the global foldable screen phone market is expected to grow by 52% year-on-year to 22.7 million units in 2023. Previous data for the second quarter of 2023 showed that China accounted for 58.6% of the global foldable smartphone market at the time. According to this ratio, China's folding screen mobile phone shipments in 2023 will be about 13.3 million units.

It is worth mentioning that it was previously rumored that Huawei had made "additional orders" for its folding screen mobile phone supply chain manufacturers at the end of the fourth quarter of last year, with the goal of shipping 7 million to 10 million folding screen mobile phones in 2024, an increase of about 3 times compared with 2.3 million in 2023.
