Back in 2021, Samsung proposed the "Galaxy for the Planet" sustainability program for mobile products, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of devices throughout the product life cycle through tangible actions.
One of Galaxy for the Planet's goals is to incorporate recycled materials into all new mobile products by 2025 to promote a richer circular economy. To this end, Samsung continues to invest in the development of innovative eco-friendly materials. For the first time in the Samsung Galaxy S22 series, the reuse of discarded fishing nets from the ocean has been realized. Last year's Samsung Galaxy S23 series used a greater amount and variety of recycled materials. Today's Samsung Galaxy S24 series has made significant progress on the Galaxy for the Planet program by blending eco-friendly design with mobile technology.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 series uses a variety of recycled materials such as recycled plastic, glass, and aluminum both inside and outside the body. It is worth mentioning that for the first time, the Samsung Galaxy S24 series uses components containing recycled cobalt and rare earth elements, which is a first in the field of smartphone manufacturing. For example, 50% of the cobalt in the battery of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is recycled cobalt, and the rare earth elements in its speakers are derived entirely from recycled materials. In addition, for the first time, recycled steel and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) are used in the collection, further advancing the use of recycled materials.
Samsung is reducing, removing, or replacing non-essential resources and materials used in the past in packaging as much as possible, and adopting more environmentally friendly solutions. The redesigned Samsung Galaxy S24 series box is made from 100% recycled paper.
While using more recycled materials, the Samsung Galaxy S24 series also has a very reliable performance in terms of durability. At the hardware level, the Samsung Galaxy S24 series supports IP68 dust and water resistance, and Corning® Gorilla® Armor material provides better scratch resistance on the screen to effectively protect the device. At the software level, the Samsung Galaxy S24 series will also support seven generations of OS upgrades and up to seven years of security updates, which will not only allow users to enjoy a high-quality experience for a long time, but also further reduce the environmental impact by extending the life of the phone.
Based on a series of environmental initiatives, the Samsung Galaxy S24 series has been awarded UL ECOLOGO® certification and carbon footprint verification by the Carbon Trust.
