Li Yan was born on September 18, 1966 in Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang Province.
Born in Heilongjiang, Li Yan began skating training at the age of 11, and in the spring of 1984, an accident almost ruined Li Yan's sports life.
During one of the races, as she was gliding in a corner, a huge centrifugal force threw her out and crashed into the baffle of the field, causing the knee muscles in her left leg to break completely. According to common sense, Li Yan could only retire when she was injured, but she did not give up. The then 16-year-old miraculously returned to the ice rink a year later.
