【Philosophy Lecture】2.3 Chen Yong | Boredom and the meaning of life

Does the mobile phone bring you happiness?

Does the Internet full of fun quench your boredom?

The spread of the Internet weaves modern life, it seems that boredom has been broken by many entertainments, and it seems to be quietly spreading and taking root.

One of the major development goals of modern society is to eliminate boredom, but boredom itself is the preserve of modern man. Busyness and entertainment are only means of escaping boredom, and at the very root of life, boredom is like a fog that cannot be dissipated, the fog of time.

From a philosophical perspective, boredom is a basic emotion of life. It floats between the self and the world, and the boredom of the world and the boredom of the self are two inseparable sides of the same coin. The negative side of boredom is that it reveals the emptiness of life and the lack of meaning, and the positive side is that it opens a window into life: facing the present.

Get out of boredom, and life will shine with new colors.

What is boredom and how to face it? This time, we invited Professor Chen Yong to explore with us.

Guest introduction

【Philosophy Lecture】2.3 Chen Yong | Boredom and the meaning of life

Speaker: Chen Yong

He is an associate professor at the School of Humanities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He studied at Fudan University and Heidelberg University in Germany. Research Expertise: Theory of Knowledge (Descartes, Kant), Heidegger Courses: History of Western Philosophy, Principles of Philosophy, Special Topics in Western Philosophy

In one of the lecture series, we have invited Professor Chen Yong to give a lecture on "The Call of the Other: Reading Han Byung-chul's The Disappearance of the Other" and "The Death of Love". The boundaries between the self and the other in the information age are discussed in detail, and the other slowly retreats from the world of the self until it disappears. The continuous expansion of self-boundaries does not bring true freedom, but rather self-coercion. This time, we will use the self as the theme to explore the relationship between the self and the world—boredom, the change and nature of this connection.
