2024DSE Applicants Statistics
In 2024, a total of 50,803 people will apply for DSE, including 43,295 "school candidates" and 7,508 "self-study students", an increase of 280 compared with the total number of applicants last year of 50,523, and the overall change is not much.
DSE application combinations
In terms of school candidates, the most common applicants applied for "4+2 (4 Core Subjects + 2 Electives)" and "4+3" combinations, accounting for 50.5% and 41.2% of the total, respectively, while 517 students applied for "4+4", accounting for 1.2%.
Biology was the most popular elective subject, with a total of 14,609 students and self-study students, followed by Chemistry with 13,659 and 13,295 economics.
After the reform of general education subjects, the Education Bureau encourages students to take one additional elective subject, and more candidates choose three elective subjects (only two out of ten students took three electives last year), but most of the admissions to Hong Kong schools are ranked in the Best5, but some schools or majors have extra points if they have excellent results in the third elective.
Mainland students apply for DSE
In the past, the number of Mainland students who sat for DSE was included in the statistics of candidates who sat for the examination with non-Hong Kong identity cards, and last year there were 299 candidates who sat for the HKDSE examination with non-Hong Kong identity cards.
This year, for the first time, the HKEAA counted 1,400 candidates for the HKDSE examination. These include holders of Hong Kong Identity Cards and non-Hong Kong Identity Cards.
Among the 1,400 Mainland HKDSE candidates, about 110 students from the Mainland "schools with the examination" applied for the examination as school candidates, while the remaining about 1,300 students sat for the HKDSE as self-study students.
It can be seen that with the announcement of the HKEAA to increase the number of HKDSE examination venues and DSE non-local places in the Mainland to 40%, many Mainland students have been attracted to apply for the HKDSE.
Although the number of applicants from the mainland is increasing, at the same time, the population of Hong Kong is also flowing out, so the overall growth of the number of applicants for DSE is not as large as expected.
