I was wrongfully imprisoned in Jordan and watched the women who had been falsely accused pray

--
The Middle East has long attracted travel enthusiasts from all over the world with its mystical and ancient charm, but "chaos" and "danger" are also the first impressions it has left on many people, and it has often become the focus of news media attention over the years.
Today's narrator, Cheng Yihan, is a global travel enthusiast with some experience traveling to the Middle East, having been to Iran, Iraq and Syria. When she was in Syria, she listened to a missile fall near her home, and these experiences made her heart stronger and stronger, and made her mentally prepared for danger, but fortunately, the previous trip was safe and smooth.
This time, she chose Jordan, a relatively safe and stable country in the Middle East, to travel. Unexpectedly, she encountered an unexpected prison sentence here.
The story begins at the end of 2022, when she injured her left knee while skiing, and in order to reduce her weight, she decided to take out the computer in her bag and put it at home on the morning of her trip to Jordan, so she needed to borrow the computer of her companion to transfer photos during the trip.
And this decision laid the groundwork for the prison disaster in this trip.

Strange Ding
My name is Cheng Yihan and I am 26 years old. In order to have time to travel around the world, I quit my job in the United States at the end of 2021. In March 2023, I went to Jordan.

In the travel and photography circles, many people I know are just netizens, and sometimes when they happen to be in each other's country, they will meet offline.
Ding, I have been adding him to WeChat for a year or two, and we have some mutual friends, but we haven't chatted much, I only know that he is a photographer.
When I was in Jordan, I found out that he was also in Jordan through my circle of friends, so on the third day of arriving in Jordan, we decided to travel together from the same place. The first day I saw him, I thought he was relatively normal.
However, on the second day of my stay, he started saying "Momoda" to me.
Every day before we went back to our respective rooms in the hotel, he would say "good night, good night" to me.
I was a little uncomfortable with his expression, but because he didn't really kiss me, I thought it might just be a habitual phrase on his part. This incident did not cause me to be alarmed.
Later, when I went to the desert with him, because I had twisted my knee in skiing, it was difficult to climb the sand slopes, so he would hold my hand and ask me if he was the first person to touch my hand.
We were on the top of a rocky slope, and while we were waiting for the sunset, he suddenly said to me, "The way you look at me makes me think about it. But I didn't even look at him at the time and replied, "I don't quite understand what you mean. When he heard this, he was silent with a stiff expression.
In the desert, Ding wanted to sleep in a tent with me, but I strongly refused, and after that, he blacked face the whole time.
I remember it was noon on March 24, and I was about to upload a photo from my phone to my hard drive, so I asked him to borrow a computer. Actually, we had already made an appointment to borrow a computer the day before, so when I went to borrow it, he didn't ask anything, opened the door and lent me the computer charger.
However, when it came time for me to return his computer, he neither opened the door nor answered the phone, and I didn't know why.
We were going to go to the Dead Sea that day, and he charged me the day in advance, but that day he suddenly said that he couldn't go, and the fare has not been refunded to me.
So I went to find other ways to get to the Dead Sea. I went to the hotel next door, which was only a dozen seconds walk from the hotel where we were staying. The wall of that hotel reads, "Depart every morning at 9 a.m. and go from the hotel to the Dead Sea." So I asked the hotel owner to reserve a place for me. During this period, I called Ding again and knocked on his door, but he did not respond. Then I moved all my luggage to the hotel next door.
After a while, he called me and asked me to go to the hotel to look for him, at this time I didn't have his computer with me, and as soon as we met, he said that I had stolen his computer.
I looked confused and said to him, "You lent me the computer in person, you won't answer my phone call, you won't open the door, you will come immediately if you call me, if you want a computer, I can go back and get it immediately." 」
He didn't listen, and went directly to the hotel front desk and said that he was going to call the police.
Ding also posted on Moments, the first paragraph of the copy said that I secretly entered his room and stole the computer, and the second paragraph said that I escaped from the hotel with his computer, and he and the security guard tried to stop me, but they didn't stop.
I was speechless, he distorted the facts, I didn't sneak into his room and, in fact, didn't try to escape with the computer. I don't know why he did this, maybe it was because Ding had bad thoughts about me, but he couldn't get a response, so he wanted to take the opportunity to take revenge on me. So I called the police and told them that someone had accused me of stealing his computer.
On the way to the police station, I also met Ding who came back from the police station, and I asked, "Give the computer to you or to the police?" He smiled sheepishly and said, "You can give it to the police." 」
When I got to the police station, I gave the computer to the police and told me what had happened.
The police later summoned Ding, and he put the computer back in his bag.
By the time it was all over, it was past nine o'clock in the evening. The police told me that I would be able to go back in a moment.

Jordan Prison
But I waited left and right, and I didn't wait for the news to let me go back, and I began to feel a little unsure.
At this time, I remembered a friend, his pseudonym is "Middle Eastern Little Turtle", he once told the story of his 63 days in captivity in a Syrian dungeon on Story FM, the Middle Eastern Little Turtle is more experienced in the Middle East, so I became friends with him early through a tourist group with the same hobby, and I thought he could provide some advice at this time, so I called him. He told me not to sign documents that I didn't understand.
Then I sat there, and a couple of people who didn't know the level took me into the police car.
When we got out of the police car again, we arrived at a hospital and they took me to a window and asked me to sign some papers. Because I couldn't read what was written on the paper, and they didn't speak English, I said I needed a translator to sign it.
We spent about an hour in the hospital, and I didn't sign, and the people in the window gestured to the people who escorted me with their eyes, and then their staff signed directly for me, probably signing my name.
These processes in Middle Eastern countries are sometimes non-compliant.
■

After signing, they escorted me back to the car and took me to a place that looked like a prison.
I had no idea that I was going to be put in jail, because they didn't have any evidence to prove my guilt. Before I went in, the jailer told me that at 8 a.m. the next morning, someone would take me out in court.
When I entered the prison, there was a woman who looked like a prison warden standing on my right, with a black iron fence in front of me, and the sanitary conditions were quite average. There are about 9 bunk beds like dormitory beds in an iron fence, but there are far more than 9 people, and there are 2 people living in 1 bed.
I didn't bring anything with me, including my change of underwear, toothbrush and facial cleanser, and I was carrying a black bag with some money in it.
When I went in, my bag was confiscated, and they took out the money in my bag and counted it, and then registered the amount, and no one reminded me to take it to jail at the time.
■
Photo/Cheng Yihan broke his mobile phone when his things were confiscated by the jailers
When I got to the barred gate, the jailer pointed to the room and said it was a Filipino room, and motioned for me to go in.
I glanced inside, and there were people with their hair disheveled, and some people smiled weirdly at me, a little scary.
There was also a pregnant woman inside, with a big belly, and she felt like she was about to give birth. She speaks in a fierce tone, a bit of an underworld, like a "prison bully" in every prison, and sometimes she will hook up with the jailers.
They probably did something to get in there, and I don't want to be with them. The jailer did not force me in, and allowed me to sit on the black leather sofa next to the warden.
I sat there and tried to fall asleep, but I really couldn't sleep.
It was about 3 a.m., and suddenly someone came to deliver Middle Eastern cookies, and I ate a little bit of it, but it didn't taste very good. They were still in Ramadan, and they didn't eat until after 7 p.m.
When the food was delivered, the iron fence door opened, because I was so sleepy that I thought that there was at least a bed or bunk in the fence to sleep on, so I went in.
The dozen or so people in the room, all Filipinos, discussed it and agreed that I would sleep with a small girl in the lower bunk of the first bed on the right-hand side.
The little Filipino girl was very friendly, she told me about the time to eat here, it was 7 p.m. and 3 a.m., and she told me which jailer was better and which was bad.
After learning more about it, I realized that you need to pay for food and drink here, so I knocked on the door and asked the jailer for money, but no one paid any attention to me.
Fortunately, the dozen or so Filipinos in the room were friendly and spoke better English than the jailers. They gave me something to eat and drink, but they didn't seem to have enough of their own stuff.
That night, I was in a state of confusion and didn't know why I was being locked up here, but I still had the hope of local justice, thinking that if I could go to court, I would have a chance to leave.
-3-
The first court session
After about an hour of sleep, I woke up early, and there was a very small skylight at the top of the prison wall that could be seen through the window that it was dawn while everyone else was still asleep.
I remember that they had promised me that I would go to court at 8 o'clock, but it should have been past 8 o'clock at that time, so I started banging on the door, saying that I was going to court and wanted to go to the Chinese embassy, but no one paid attention to me.
When it was almost noon, everyone woke up one after another, and I asked the people in the room, they said to take me to court at 8 o'clock, why can't I see anyone now?
They told me that this is very normal, that people here are like that, they don't speak reliably, and their promises are generally not kept.
I started to get a little nervous, and it was a very hard morning.
Finally, at noon, someone called my name, took me to the court session, and also returned my bag, which was also in my bag. I was relieved
When I walked out of the prison door, I was holding my corset, because I would take it off when I went to bed at night, but when the jailer saw it, he pointed to the corset in my hand, saying that I had stolen it, and called me a thief.
This feeling of being treated like a thief made me angry, and I explained that I didn't steal. As a result, the jailer said with a mocking face, "Everyone here says they didn't steal. I also made sure that the corset was not someone else's before letting me out. I felt very bad in my heart.
When I got into the police car going to court, I wanted to report to my family, but they wouldn't let me. So I could only put my phone in my bag and put my hand in to secretly send WeChat. I tried to contact my mother and the embassy, and the embassy pushed me to a local Chinese and asked them to help me find a lawyer, and I was in the process of transferring to a lawyer along the way.
In court, I recounted what had happened in English, and luckily, the judge found me innocent and could be released. I was very happy that this imprisonment was just a little farce and that I could go on with my own travels.
But to my surprise, perhaps because the system was not perfect, or the evidence was really insufficient, I was inexplicably escorted into the police car again.
After about ten minutes of driving, I saw the prison door again. I was a little broken in my heart, feeling that the people here just don't count when they talk, and they lied to me one step at a time.
But it was precisely because of this re-incarceration that I saw a side that I would not have seen as a traveler, and it also made me know that the most terrible thing in this prison is not the bad environment in the middle, but something more gloomy.

The dark side of the "black room".
This time when I went to prison, the jailer wanted to confiscate my things again, and this time I had a good eye and secretly put a spare phone in my shoes without being detected.
This time I was assigned a room full of black women, and there were about seven or eight black women in a room. Everyone had their own bunks, but the blanket on the bed was so dirty that it felt like there should be fleas on it.
I was assigned to the single bed next to me.
Here, the jailer does not call the person's number, nor does he call the person's name, but directly the person's country. Some people are called Ghana Ghana, some people are called Uganda and I am called China.
Once, one of the black girls was so angry that she told the jailer not to call her Ghana Garner, she had her own name, but the jailer didn't listen at all.
At that time, I was the only one in the prison who was called China, and I felt very uncomfortable and ashamed of Ding, who had falsely imprisoned me.
One of the black girls told me that the jailers were polite to me because I wasn't very dark-skinned and they had been beaten by the jailers.
The first meal of the day was at 7 p.m., and the jailer brought in a box of rice, along with a few hard-to-swallow flatbreads, plus a small chicken thigh, which was obviously not enough.
A black sister mysteriously took an extra box of lunch, hugged it to her chest and walked up to me, motioning me to hide it, telling me that you can eat it when you are hungry, and I hid it under the bed, and I felt very touched.
But another black girl found out that she had taken an extra box of lunch and asked her to hand it over to her. The two of them quarreled, and the quarrel was quite intense.
I had mixed feelings, and it hit me very hard, the last time I saw a snatch for food was when I was watching animals migrate in the East African savannah.
They argued for about ten minutes, but the black sister who helped me get more food didn't take it out, and the other party gave up.
The next time I saw that meal was the next morning, and the black sister took out the lunch box herself, and gave me the chicken leg inside, and she ate the rice herself, and she must not have enough to eat.
I spent the whole afternoon on March 25 chatting with the black girls in the jail, and I asked them how long they had been in prison, some saying how many months, some saying more than a year.
Someone comforted me and said, "Maybe you'll be able to go out tomorrow." But I became even more desperate when I heard it, because that's what people comforted me in that Filipino cell, but I'm back here.
The black girls asked me why I was being locked in, and I said I didn't know, and the police arrested me without any evidence.
They were not surprised, they were accustomed to such false accusations, and they also believed that the existence of unjust cases was a normal thing.
They told me that some of the people here were imprisoned because they came here to work and their visas expired, some because they were caught working in the area, and some people were falsely accused.
There was a black girl named Maria, who was about my age, and she told me about her experience.
She worked as a nanny in Jordan for 10 months for her employer, and one day, her employer suddenly falsely accused her of beating the family child and deducted all her 10 months' salary. But she didn't hit the child, and the employer didn't have a camera at home, so it became a matter of confusion. In this religious country, where they are mainly Muslim, the Quran is important to them, and the official way to convict her is to have her employer put his hand on the Quran and swear that he confirms that Maria hit the child.
As a result, Maria was sent to prison and her 10 months' wages were confiscated by her employer.
I find it ridiculous that just because her employer put her hand on the Quran and swore that Maria was really in jail and without any evidence, she was locked up for so long.
I asked her curiously, if others can frame us at will, can we, the victims, frame them in turn and get them in?
Maria says that this thing is a weapon for bad people because they can easily violate their conscience, but there is no way for people with good hearts like us to make false accusations because it goes against our hearts.
I was very impressed that Maria's bed was on my right side at the time, and she would spread a blanket in the corner in front of my bed every day, and would kneel there and pray at a fixed time. She looked very reverent and calm, with a little pain and a hint of numbness after being tortured.
The employer slandered her, probably just to withhold her 10 months' salary, and never cared about the black girl's life.
It occurred to me that Maria's name means "bitter" in Aramaic, and that her life might be as bitter as her name.
A lot of black girls here can't get out now, one is because their cases are not completely over, and there are people who need to be deported, but they need to buy their own tickets back, and they don't have the money. I asked them why they didn't ask their families to help them buy their plane tickets, and one black girl told me that most of them couldn't remember their family's phone numbers anymore.
I felt sorry for them, so I said I could help them buy a ticket.
I don't know where they stole some paper, so I wrote down my WhatsApp number and left it for them. Wait until they get their phones and then find a way to contact me.

Inference of guilt or inference of innocence?
The experience of black inmates made Cheng Yihan even more desperate, and in the chaotic judicial system, clearing the charge has become a matter of resignation. But unlike her fellow inmates, Cheng Yihan secretly brought her mobile phone into the prison, which gave her a channel to contact the outside world, and it was through this mobile phone that she mastered more evidence related to the case, and also successfully contacted a lawyer, giving her hope of clearing her name.
Because I secretly brought my phone in, I had to hide in a blanket to use it.
That night, I received a message from Ding, saying that if I gave him a sum of money, he would withdraw the lawsuit, including his lost work expenses, accommodation fees, ticket change fees, etc., which added up to less than 10,000 yuan.
I consulted with the Middle Eastern tortoise and he suggested that I give the money to the other party because he knew that the justice system here was chaotic and that I could be locked up for a long time.
■
Photo / Cheng Yihan found an agency to translate the chat record of Ding asking her for money
But I couldn't swallow this breath at the time, and I felt that if I was given this money, it would be like admitting that I really stole something, when in fact my legal fees were more than 10,000 yuan. I'd rather pay more for a lawyer than pay for a clean slate.
At that time, I had not brushed my teeth for two days in a row, and it looked like the blanket that I hadn't washed for several years was covering my body, and my whole body was very itchy, and more importantly, I didn't change my underwear, and my body was very uncomfortable.
On the third day, March 26, I was promised to wake up in the morning and pick me up for the trial, but it didn't take me until almost noon.
In this trial, I presented some new evidence, the first is the evidence that Ding asked me for money, and the second is that when he lent me a computer, he asked me, "Is the computer used?" and I took a screenshot and saved it, which contradicts my testimony of stealing his computer.
In fact, if the lawyer can help me go to the hotel for monitoring, it will be very favorable evidence, but the hotel said that the monitoring could not be found.
The judge found me not guilty again and told me I could leave today. The lawyer and the embassy people also confirmed with them that I could indeed go.
After I came out of the courtroom, I was taken to sign some things, and then they put me in the police car.
After driving for more than ten minutes, I saw the prison door again, and at that moment, I really had a feeling of complete despair, and that moment was the most desperate moment in my whole process.
I'm going to go on with this dark life, it's like a cycle that I can't get out of.
This time I went back to prison, and I was assigned to a Filipino room again.
A Filipino told me her story, she said that she bought a car, had been driving it for two years, the seller had privately changed the contract price, and after two years she had sued her in court, saying that she owed money, and she had gone to court several times to point out the other party's loopholes, but the seller had revised his testimony three times, and the judge finally sentenced her to prison.
I listened to these unjust, false and wrongly decided cases, and I felt that in the cubicles of this dungeon, I don't know how many unjust, false and wrongful cases there will be.
Listening to their own stories, it feels like they have accepted these things.
I talked to the Filipino for a while, then I lay down on a dirty mat on the ground and closed my eyes to recuperate. The incandescent light on the roof was kept off all day, so I took a piece of cloth and put it over my eyes. It was very noisy, and the jailers were arguing, pushing, and shoving with the prisoners. I feel like everything here is a bit confusing to me.
I began to think about the impartiality of justice, should there be an inference of guilt or innocence?
If a person cannot be proven guilty, then the person should be acquitted, and one should not need to prove one's innocence. For example, he said that if I stole and that he should go to the hotel to prove it, he apparently didn't do it, and I ended up in jail, which is obviously a problem.
All of this can be summed up in 8 words - what you want to add to the sin, there is no excuse.
In the Filipino room, I heard that someone had died in this prison not long ago, either by suicide or by the jailers.
I think if I'm kept locked up here, if I'm unlucky, I'll really die.
But I couldn't help anything and decided to give up struggling.
-6-
Return to the civilized world
At about 11 o'clock that night, after the door of the cell "clanged," a Filipino cellmate called my name very excitedly and told me that the jailer said I could go.
I'm actually numb, I haven't even reacted, what does it mean that I can go? Can you really let me go?
The jailer, who had insisted that I was a thief, changed his face to a very amiable face, and asked me to take my confiscated luggage and sign it.
At that time, I wasn't sure if I would ever be released from prison permanently, because I had experienced so many disappointments that I didn't dare to look forward to anything anymore.
It wasn't until I actually got back to the hotel that I was a little relieved.
Late at night when I got out of prison, the first thing I did was order a burger, fries, and a coke. I haven't eaten normal food for a few days, and I'm quite happy when I eat it. Only bitterness can bring out how sweet ordinary life is.
I want to eat burgers, fries, and Coke, probably because I feel like they're the "civilized world" and I feel like I'm finally back in my controlled state.
That night, I took a very serious two-hour shower under the shower head at the hotel, rubbing every part of my body many times, until four or five o'clock in the morning before going to bed.
When I got out of prison, it was late at night, but I still had a feeling that the whole world was sunny. Lying in bed, I felt for the first time that it was a very rare thing to be free.
After I was released from prison, I posted my experience on the Internet, but I didn't expect that 8 people who had contact with Ding during their travels contacted me, and they all said that they had economic disputes with Ding, but almost all of them did not let him be punished because of insufficient evidence.
Many of them did not give up on continuing to prosecute, and I was no exception, but after I consulted with the Middle Eastern turtle and some other friends, they all told me that the counterclaim would be a long process and that I did not know how long I would need to stay in Jordan.
■
Photo / Someone else broke the news of Ding's private message
And I have seen how chaotic the judicial system in this country is, and I still remember the numb faces of the girls who were wrongfully imprisoned. If I don't succeed in sneaking my phone into prison this time to contact a lawyer, I don't know if I'm still in prison now. If I hadn't met those kind inmates, I don't know how I would have survived those few days.
So, I really didn't have much confidence in winning this lawsuit, and I couldn't accept it all over again, so I had to put it aside for the time being.
But there is one thing that I can't let go of for a long time, and that is to help some black inmates buy plane tickets home.
I didn't have the courage to go back to prison on my own, and even though I had only been there for three days, it still cast a shadow on me, and I was afraid that I would be detained. So I went to the embassy and asked him to take me to the jailer and tell me that I was going to buy plane tickets for the black girls.
But the people at the embassy did not agree, and he thought that going to prison again might be a complication. He is also worried about giving these people the impression that Chinese are relatively rich, and they will look for Chinese for spending money in the future.
The embassy also told me not to go to Jordan again for the next few years.
I have always hoped that they will find me through the number I left on the note, so that I will have the opportunity to repay them for their kindness to me in prison for those days.
However, they have not been in touch with each other, and we may never be able to contact them again
I just hope they keep the note, and pray silently that Maria they can get out of prison sooner and get a belated justice.
