His father died within a few days of his birth, and when he was ten years old, his biological mother was sold, and he could only rely on his eldest half-brother Xu Huai. However, Xu Huai was not good to him, and he said in the "Zhang Gongshu, the Deputy Envoy of Shangtixue", when he described his situation: "The flesh and bones are fried, and the beans are burning." Day and night, only the body and the shadow. Even such a brother died by mistake when he was twenty-five years old because he was obsessed with alchemy.

He has been brilliant since he was a child, known as a "prodigy", he can read by himself at the age of six, and he can write essays at the age of nine.

In the nineteenth year of Jiajing (1540), at the age of twenty, he was admitted to Xiucai. Since then, Xu Wei has participated in the Shaoxing Fuxiang Examination twice, until he was forty-one years old, he has experienced eight exams, and he has never been able to win.

Just committed suicide or not, he wrote an angry "Self-Epitaph" in prison.

He was also not idle in prison, and completed the annotation of "Zhou Yi Shen Tong Deed" in prison.

In the twenty-first year of Wanli (1593), Xu Wei died at the age of seventy-three at his daughter-in-law's house.

We can see Xu Wei's life, what kind of will supported him to finish, tragic childhood, repeatedly failed the test, failed the exam eight times, what a back, there is no way to serve the country, the death of his wife, and the death of his benefactor have directly or indirectly led to his psychotic attack. What kind of determination made him drive the nail into his ear, it was terrifying to think about it, and this kind of thing happened nine times, because he killed his wife because of mental illness and spent seven years in prison. Even when he died, he didn't even have a straw mat by his side, only a vicious dog.

Throughout Xu Wei's life, although it was full of suffering, it did not wipe out his will to create, and his attainments in poetry, calligraphy and painting reached the point of perfection, and he also became one of the three great talents of the Ming Dynasty.
