Global computing giants compete for AI, what is the impact of the A-share industry chain?

author:China Securities Journal

On January 9, Beijing time, several international computing giants, such as NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm, showed off their latest chip products and technology solutions at the 2024 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2024). The giants have launched multi-dimensional competition in terms of hardware capabilities, prices, and application markets.

The agency said that AI has become an unstoppable industry development direction, with the release of computing power and the emergence of new interactive terminals, companies that "sell shovels" in China's industrial chain will explore growth opportunities in the field of computing chips, memory, heat dissipation, and battery energy overall upgrades.

Multi-dimensional competition

At CES 2024, the AI battle of computing giants is in full swing.

Nvidia and AMD were the first to fight. In a special presentation on January 8, Jeff Fisher, senior vice president of GeForce at NVIDIA, announced the new GeForce RTX 40 SUPER Series GPUs to power the growing development of generative AI.

AMD introduced the AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT GPU and expanded its portfolio of desktop and mobile processors at a speaking event on the same day. According to reports, AMD has introduced the power of a dedicated AI neural processing unit (NPU) to desktop computer processors for the first time through Ryzen AI to unlock more AI features and improve computing productivity and efficiency.

In terms of price, according to the difference in performance, the price gradient of NVIDIA's different GPU models is around 5,000 yuan, 8,000 yuan and tens of thousands of yuan. AMD's latest Radeon RX 7600 XT 16GB GPU has a suggested retail price of 2,353.83 yuan (RMB).

According to industry insiders, AMD's new GPU is designed to benchmark against Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4060. Although AMD's technology accumulation in the GPU field is not as deep as NVIDIA's, this pricing reflects a clear price advantage, and may be favored by customers who do not pursue extreme computing power performance and win some market opportunities.

From the perspective of the application market, NVIDIA's AI computing power innovation territory mainly revolves around the fields of games, creation, generative AI and robotics. According to Fisher, take the most powerful GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER as an example, which supports 4K panoramic ray-traced games. In the most graphics-intensive games, the RTX 4080 SUPER performs 1.4x faster than the previous-gen GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. Creators are also faster at generating videos and generating images.

AMD, on the other hand, is focusing on PCs, where AI applications are becoming more and more abundant. According to AMD, at present, Acer, Asus, Lenovo, HP and Razer are all building Windows 11 laptops and handheld gaming systems with AI computing power, and the AI computing power of these products is partly provided by AMD's processors.

Also eyeing the PC market is Intel, the global CPU market leader. Michelle, head of Intel's Client Computing Group, warmed up for the new products at the conference on January 8, showcasing Intel's new Core mobile processors, and revealed that it will successively display laptops and other hardware devices jointly launched with partners during CES 2024. "Power, performance, graphics, and artificial intelligence, we have it all. Michelle said.

In addition, Qualcomm, the world's oldest mobile phone chip supplier, has opened up a new direction of spatial computing in the new wave of AI, and is currently working closely with companies in the MR (mixed reality) and automotive fields. At CES 2024, Qualcomm's progress with BMW, NIO, XREAL and other companies will be revealed in a speech on January 11.

Under the momentum of new products, the share price of computing giants also performed well in the secondary market. As of the close of the U.S. stock market on January 8, Nvidia rose 6.43% to $522.53 per share, a record high, with a total market capitalization of $1,290.6 billion. AMD surged 5.48% on the day to $146.18 per share, with a total market capitalization of $236.2 billion. Intel and Qualcomm rose 3.33% and 1.68%, respectively.

According to the analysis of a number of brokerage institutions, with the deepening of large model training, the first year of application will be opened in 2024. The product layout and cooperation of overseas computing giants have reflected the increasing demand for AI computing power in terminals such as games, personal computers, mobile phones, smart wearable devices, and automobiles. At the beginning, these needs were mainly reflected in the enterprise-level market, but factors such as the gradual completion of product functions, the exploration of application scenarios, and the vigorous marketing of enterprises will promote the formation of a super-large consumer market.

According to the "2023-2024 Chinese Intelligent Computing Power Development Assessment Report" released by IDC, the mainland artificial intelligence computing power market will reach 66.4 billion yuan in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 82.5%. It is estimated that by 2030, the global computing power driven by artificial intelligence will increase by 500 times, and a blue ocean market of 100 billion intelligent computing power has quietly opened.

From computing power production to consumption, to AI terminal equipment manufacturing, many A-share listed companies have participated in it.

In the field of games, PalmFun announced on January 9 that PalmFun and NVIDIA will cooperate in AI technology and applications, and Nvidia will provide DLSS, Audio2Face and other AI technical support to the company's "AI game creation platform". In the future, the two sides will continue to maintain exchanges and cooperation in the fields of AI game development tools, AIGC, and AI application scenarios.

In the field of AI computers, Emdoor Information recently said on the investor interactive platform that the company has maintained all-round cooperation from product development to market development with core device and computer technology manufacturers such as Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, MediaTek, Rockchip, UNISOC, Microsoft, Google, etc., and can deeply participate in the development and verification of its application system prototypes.

In the MR field, Goertek recently launched a next-generation MR reference design based on the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform and the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform with Qualcomm.

In the automotive field, the reporter learned that Thundersoft has in-depth cooperation with upstream chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm and NVIDIA, and has achieved the world premiere of intelligent cockpit solutions and domain controllers for many times, with leading technology advantages, and cooperation with upstream suppliers has helped the company seize market share.

Guojin Securities said that driven by AI, a large number of PCBs (printed circuit boards), DDR5/HBM memory, server heat dissipation, optical chips/optical modules, etc. are used in computing power server shipments, and the A-share segment is expected to continue to benefit.
