Wu Jieping (1917-2011), a native of Changzhou, Jiangsu, was a well-known medical scientist and medical educator in mainland China, and a senior academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Academician Wu Jieping has been engaged in the clinical treatment and scientific research of urology for a long time, he has presided over the establishment of the first urology department in New China, led the establishment of Capital Medical University, and is one of the pioneers of urology in China. Academician Wu Jieping has a large number of innovations and creations in the field of urology, many treatment methods are ahead of the world, and enjoys a high reputation in the world, and is known as "the first person in Chinese urology".
Wu Jieping was born in Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, and followed his father who founded a spinning factory in Tianjin when he was a child. My father is a very methodical entrepreneur, and he is open-minded and pragmatic, and he is very concerned about his children's education, so that the children have laid a solid foundation for Chinese culture from an early age, and at the same time actively supports the children to learn Xi mathematics and English. Wu Jieping's father thought that being a doctor was a good profession, not only to treat diseases and save people, but also not to lose his job. So all four Wu brothers chose to study medicine, and they were all admitted to Peking Union Medical College.
After graduating from Peking Union Medical College, Wu Jieping was assigned to work in a local hospital. In 1944, he became a resident physician and later went to the United States for further training in order to improve his skills. His supervisor, Professor Huggins, was the founder of modern endocrine therapy for oncology and was a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Medicine.
He appreciated Wu Jieping very much, and wanted to keep him to work by his side after the completion of his advanced study, but Wu Jieping believed that it was his mission to return to China to serve the motherland. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, with the support of the state, Wu Jieping's medical career gradually reached its peak, especially in the world's leading level in renal tuberculosis.
In the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, there were many tuberculosis patients. At that time, there was no specific medicine for tuberculosis, which had to be removed surgically. If only one kidney has TB, it is surgically removed, and the patient relies on the other kidney to survive. However, if a patient has tuberculosis in both kidneys, then it is a terminal illness. Wu Jieping was extremely unbearable when he saw this situation, so he conducted an in-depth study.
Through the analysis of a large number of data and clinical examples, Wu Jieping found that among patients diagnosed with bilateral renal tuberculosis, hydronephrosis is actually many times, that is, many of them are misdiagnosed. As a result, he proposed a new concept of "hydronephrosis contralateral to renal tuberculosis". This result shocked the world, was highly praised by the international urology community, and was selected in the American Yearbook.
Wu Jieping's medical skills are extremely exquisite, and he has even become the "royal doctor" of many dignitaries. In 1962, for example, he was sent to Indonesia to treat the president for kidney disease. The Indonesian president was suffering from severe kidney disease at the time, and doctors in his country and in the United States believed that only the kidney could be removed.
However, Wu Jieping believes that there is no need for surgery at all, only medication is needed for conditioning, and normal function can be restored within three months. The president took his advice, and after three months of recuperation, he was able to regain his health. For this, Wu Jieping was awarded the Indonesian National Order of the Second Class.
It is Wu Jieping's lifelong ideal and pursuit to maintain the international advanced level of urology in China and promote the development of urology in China. In 1964, under the advocacy and promotion of Wu Jieping, the Urology Research Department was established in Peking University Hospital, which was later changed to the Institute of Urology.
Academician Wu Jieping has edited several works on urology, including "Urology", "Surgery", "Progress in Urology" and other works, and published 150 medical papers with world influence. The essays of these works were later compiled into the book "Wu Jieping's Collected Works".
