Despite the many similarities with today's much-maligned world, it was a challenge to get Erich Kestner's deeply poignant autobiographical novel Fabian – one of the most important novels of the Weimar Republic – out of its gloomy living environment. Dominique Graff has mastered this challenge brilliantly. His style is subtlely sharp, cold-blooded light, yet quietly melancholy. Like a slow-turning disco ball, the film is about the connection between sex and an empty refrigerator, as well as the disintegration of dreams of happiness.
