Originally, the name of the Chinese People's Armed Police Force was the Chinese People's Public Security Central Column, which was established in 1949.
At that time, the peaceful liberation of Beiping required a large number of armed police forces to maintain the social security of Beiping. Therefore, the Central Committee reorganized the 160th Division of the 47th Army of the Fourth Field Army and the Central Garrison Regiment into the Chinese People's Public Security Central Column.

Since then, the central authorities have successively carried out a series of reforms to the central column of Chinese people's public security and local public security forces.
In 1959, the name Chinese People's Armed Police Force appeared for the first time, but the Chinese People's Armed Police Force at this time was still very different from the current Armed Police Force.

Although it does not belong to the PLA sequence, the personnel of the armed police force are still transformed from the PLA, and in order to enrich the armed police force, the central government has directly reorganized a number of PLA troops into the armed police force.
In other words, in terms of combat effectiveness, the original armed police force was actually not much different from the PLA.
So, after years of development, how far is the combat effectiveness of today's armed police force and the PLA?
The strength is close, and there is a large gap in heavy firepower
If we look at it from the perspective of individual combat, the combat effectiveness of the armed police force is indeed not comparable with that of the PLA.
Because the main goal of the PLA is to strike at external enemies, and all aspects of capability need to be the best of their ability, the upper limit of the PLA's training intensity is higher than that of the armed police force during training.
For example, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) has special forces, and there are also soldiers who are at the top level in all indicators, and their individual combat capabilities are far from being comparable to those of the armed police force.
However, this is not to say that the strength of the armed police force is not strong enough, but the main task of the armed police force determines that the armed police force does not need to have an excessively strong individual combat capability, but more needs a high degree of cooperation, that is, the overall strength.
From the perspective of overall strength, the strength of the armed police force is actually not much different from that of the general PLA. The training subjects of the armed police force are basically the same as those of the PLA, and most of the personnel are also converted from the PLA.
In terms of equipment, the equipment of the armed police force is also the same as that of the PLA troops, including tactical helmets, body armor, night vision devices, and other advanced equipment.
The only difference is the heavy firepower, because the PLA has a special task, so the heavy firepower is completely crushing the armed police force, and in this regard, the armed police force really cannot be compared with the PLA.
However, if war breaks out, the central authorities will naturally equip the armed police force with corresponding heavy firepower according to the actual situation, and by that time, the combat effectiveness of the armed police force will not be much different from that of the PLA.
Even now, the heavy firepower of the armed police force cannot be underestimated. The armed police force is equipped with Wuzhi 10 armed helicopters, as well as 122 vehicle-mounted howitzers.
In addition, the armed police force also has mobile truck guns and various armored vehicles, and under normal circumstances, the firepower of the armed police force is sufficient.
Therefore, the armed police force is not much different from the PLA in most aspects, and it can be regarded as a PLA performing special tasks, and its combat effectiveness is very close to that of the PLA, and when necessary, it can be directly transformed into the PLA to perform tasks.
Since the gap in combat effectiveness is not very large, how many people are in the Chinese people's armed police force, and how much has China's national defense strength been improved?
The number was sufficient and could be reorganized into 7 army groups
After the formal establishment of the Chinese People's Armed Police Force, the central government also carried out certain reforms according to the actual situation, and established two armed police mobile corps in 2018.
In addition, China has 32 local internal security corps, each with 20 detachments under its jurisdiction, which are responsible for public order in each provincial-level administrative region of China.
The total number of armed police mobile corps, local internal guard corps, and other armed police units is about 660,000, which if converted into the People's Liberation Army, is equivalent to about seven group armies.
Of course, China's defense forces include not only the army, but also the navy and air force. If all the armed police forces are transformed into the PLA, China's national defense strength will be greatly enhanced.
In addition, China's defense force also includes a large number of reservists, militias, and veterans, which is also quite a force.
According to statistics, the number of Chinese reservists is about 10 million, the militia is about 8 million, and the number of retired soldiers is close to 60 million.
Taken together, the total number of Chinese troops can reach about 80 million. An army of 80 million can completely protect the motherland, so for China, the army is completely sufficient.
Although the total number of troops in service is small, in today's situation it is completely sufficient. Even if war breaks out, there is no need to worry.
