Saddam Hussein is gone, where is Iraq's tomorrow?
Today we're going to talk about an absolutely important question that you don't think about often: Is Iraq a better place to come out of power after Saddam Hussein is out of power, or is it a deeper predicament? It's not an easy topic, but don't worry, we'll add some factual and historical material to it.
First of all, we have to look back at history. In 1979, Saddam Hussein rose to the pinnacle of power and has since become synonymous with Iraq. Iraq under his rule had an iron fist and strict social control. At the same time, however, under his leadership, Iraq has witnessed the development of a number of social infrastructure and education systems.
Then came the eight-year Iran-Iraq war, which destabilized the entire Middle East. The war pushed the country to the brink of bankruptcy, and the economic losses were enormous. At that time, foreign exchange reserves were sharply reduced, and the state treasury was almost depleted. During that time, the Iraqi people were living in dire straits.
Then came the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. Saddam Hussein was overthrown shortly after the US troops entered Baghdad. Many people are looking forward to a new life – after all, the oppression is over, right? But the reality is cruel. While Saddam's downfall did bring some improvement in human rights, the ensuing civil war, rampant terrorism, and the destruction of infrastructure plunged the country into chaos.
Speaking of specific data, we can see that indicators such as GDP growth rates have fluctuated over the past few years. Sometimes it looks like things are better, other times it's precarious.
Now look at these historical events – beginning with Saddam Hussein's rise to power in 1979, to the Iran-Iraq war, and finally to the Gulf War and the U.S. invasion – each of which has had a profound impact on the country.
I know you might want to ask me my point: So, has Iraq really changed for better or worse in the years since Saddam? Honestly, friends, there is no simple and straightforward answer to this question. Personally, I think everyone should make their own judgment based on the facts. Of course I have my opinion – but more importantly what you think.
Remember: there is always only one true fact. What we need to do is to look for it, understand it, and shape our view of how the world works and how the future should develop based on it.
So, before we end today, ask you to think about it: Can a country that is still in the midst of strife and instability find a path to peace and prosperity without a strongman ruler, will it be easy, will it be fast, or will it be very tortuous?
