A number of airlines have announced that they will reduce fuel surcharges from today

On January 4, Sichuan Airlines issued a notice stating that due to the adjustment of the comprehensive procurement cost of aviation fuel, in accordance with the relevant requirements of the National Development and Reform Commission and the Civil Aviation Administration of China on the linkage mechanism between passenger fuel surcharge and aviation kerosene price linkage mechanism for domestic civil aviation domestic routes, the fuel surcharge collection standard for domestic routes will be adjusted for flight tickets sold on and after January 5, 2024.

The new levy standards are: for routes over 800 km, the fuel surcharge will be adjusted from the original 90 yuan to 70 yuan, for routes of 800 km and below, the fuel surcharge will be adjusted from the original 50 yuan to 40 yuan, infants will be exempted from the fuel surcharge for domestic passenger transportation, and the fuel surcharge for domestic routes will be halved for children (including unaccompanied children), revolutionary disabled servicemen and people's policemen disabled in the line of duty, that is, 30 yuan will be charged for flights above 800 kilometers, and 20 yuan will be charged for flights below 800 kilometers (inclusive).

In addition, a number of airlines such as Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and Lucky Air have also issued relevant notices announcing new fuel surcharge standards for domestic routes. At the same time, airlines remind that tickets sold before January 5, 2024 for flights on or after January 5, 2024 will not be subject to a fuel surcharge or refund if they are voluntarily changed on or after January 5, 2024.

The Spring Festival travel in 2024 is coming, and the fuel surcharge will be reduced, which will save passengers travel costs. Judging from the current booking situation, the popular domestic destinations for the Spring Festival in 2024 are Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Harbin, Chengdu, Haikou, Kunming, Sanya, and Hangzhou.

The Chao News reporter calculated an account, if Hangzhou people travel by plane, take two large and one small family as an example, from Hangzhou to Harbin, buy a ticket after January 5, you can spend 100 yuan less.

Jiang Na, an analyst of Jinlianchuang refined oil products, analyzed that the main reason for the reduction of fuel surcharges was the sharp decline in jet fuel prices.

According to the monitoring data of Jinlianchuang, from November 27 to December 22, 2023, the average international crude oil price was US$72.72/barrel, down US$6.17/barrel month-on-month, the average price of jet fuel in Singapore was US$102.79/barrel, down US$4.44/barrel month-on-month, the average exchange rate of the US dollar against the RMB was 7.11, down 0.05 from the previous round, and the landed dutiable price was 6,698 yuan/ton, down 339 yuan/ton from the previous month.

Will it continue to fall after three consecutive drops?

According to Li Xiaojin, director and professor of the Institute of Aviation Economic Development of the Civil Aviation University of China, the subsequent increase in fuel surcharges depends on the price of oil. "There are factors that drive oil prices up and down, such as the international geopolitical situation, the trend of the US dollar index and the development of new energy, etc., which will affect the trend of oil prices. ”

As the Spring Festival approaches, the number of air ticket inquiries and bookings will increase, the fuel surcharge for air tickets will be reduced, and the cost of air tickets for passengers will be slightly reduced. Jinlianchuang analysis believes that in the first quarter, international crude oil futures maintained a weak and volatile trend, under the influence of which Singapore's jet fuel prices may rebound weakly, so the probability of an increase in air ticket fuel surcharges is not large.
