January 3, 2024 was a day of grief for many passengers and staff who flew from Hokkaido's New Chitose Airport on a Japan Airlines Airbus A350 to Tokyo's Haneda Airport. During the landing at Haneda Airport, the airliner collided with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft, causing a fire on the runway and killing a total of five people, including the captain.
Call records released by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism show that air traffic control had issued permission to land the Japan Airlines passenger plane before the incident. On the other hand, the air traffic control department told the Japan Coast Guard aircraft at 17:45 local time on the 2nd, "Please taxi to the runway standby on the ground", and it has not yet been allowed to enter the runway.
The aircraft involved was an A350 manufactured by Airbus of France and delivered to Japan Airlines in November 2021. Airbus has said it will send a team of experts to assist in the investigation of the accident and provide technical assistance to Japan's traffic safety authorities. In addition, the French Civil Aviation Safety Investigation and Analysis Agency will also send an investigation team to Japan to participate in the investigation.
After the accident, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin expressed condolences to the victims and the injured at a regular press conference. He said that Japan had not requested assistance at the moment. The Chinese Embassy in Japan has immediately verified the situation with the local government authorities and airlines, and confirmed that no Chinese citizens were injured in the accident. There were 14 Hong Kong tourists on board, and the embassy in Japan has contacted them and reissued travel documents for those who lost their documents.
