How was the Sanxingdui site discovered?

Details: Archaeologists began to study Sanxingdui in the 50s and 60s of the last century. In 1963, the Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relics Management Committee and Sichuan University found the ruins of houses, ash pits and other relics in Moon Bay, and unearthed more relics such as jade and pottery, and the cultural appearance of the Sanxingdui site gradually became clear, confirming that this is a large-scale central settlement with rich cultural connotation, long cultural accumulation and ancient Shu period. The real large-scale and systematic archaeological work of Sanxingdui began in 1980. Beginning in May of that year, Wang Youpeng, a researcher of the former Sichuan Provincial Cultural Management Association (the predecessor of the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology), led a team to carry out archaeological excavations in Sanxingdui, and a large number of relics and relics appeared, and unprecedented research results were obtained. From July to August 1986, the No. 1 and No. 2 sacrificial pits of Sanxingdui site were discovered by archaeologists, and a large number of precious cultural relics such as bronzes, jade, and gold were unearthed. From 1987 to 2019, archaeologists excavated important relics such as the city wall and moat, the cemetery of Rensheng Village, and the foundation site of large buildings in Qingguan Mountain, and gained a basic understanding of the scope, functional layout and construction process of the ancient city of Sanxingdui. In the autumn of 2019, the archaeological excavation of the sacrificial pit area of the Sanxingdui site was restarted, and more than 17,000 pieces of bronze, gold, jade, ivory carving and other cultural relics were unearthed in the newly discovered 6 "artifact pits", including important cultural relics such as bronze masks and bronze altars.
