Prosecutors reportedly charged Lee Jae-myung with being involved in a scandal-ridden land development project in the city during his tenure as mayor of Seongnam from 2014 to 2018, accusing him of breach of trust, embezzlement and other crimes. According to previous reports, on September 18, the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office asked the court to approve the arrest of Lee Jae-myung on charges of dereliction of duty, accepting bribes, and instigating others to commit perjury. The Seoul Central District Court rejected the decision on September 27 and decided not to approve the arrest. On October 6, Lee Jae-myung denied the prosecution's allegations at the first trial of the corruption and malfeasance case, saying that he had "never agreed to any request from the real estate speculators whom he hated."
