Queen Margrethe II of Denmark
said in the New Year's address on the same day
She will abdicate on January 14, 2024
In her message, Margrethe II said that January 14, 2024, is the 52nd anniversary of her accession to the throne, when she will abdicate and pass the throne to her eldest son, Crown Prince Frederick.
According to the BBC, Margrethe II revealed in her speech that she had undergone back surgery early last year, and since then she has begun to think about her future, including whether to pass the throne to future generations.
"I've made my decision, and now is the time," she said.
In her speech, Margrethe II thanked the people, the government and parliament for their support and trust in her and the royal family.
The Danish Prime Minister's Office issued a statement in the evening, expressing its gratitude to Queen Margrethe II for her dedication and efforts to Denmark for more than 50 years, and looking forward to the new king succeeding to the throne in January 2024.
According to the BBC, the 83-year-old Margrethe II succeeded her late father Frederick IX to the throne in 1973, and she is currently the only reigning queen in the world and the longest reigning monarch in Europe.
Margrethe II, born on 16 April 1940 in Copenhagen, was the eldest daughter of former King Frederick IX and the fifth monarch of the Glücksburg dynasty. He studied at the University of Copenhagen, Aarhus University, Cambridge University, University of Paris and London School of Economics, where he received his Juris Doctorate.
Mr. and Mrs. Margaret had two sons, Frédéric Frederick Henrik Christian, born on 26 May 1968, and Joakim Holger Waldemar Christian on 7 June 1969. The eldest son, Frederick, is now the crown prince.
Margrethe II is the first head of state of a Western country to visit China after China's reform and opening up. In September 1979, Grethe II paid an official visit to China, and the queen and his wife visited Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Hangzhou, Guilin and other places. After 35 years, Margrethe II visited China again in 2014, breaking with the practice of the Danish monarch visiting only one country once in his lifetime.
