Recently, the 154th Science and Technology Frontier Forum of the Faculty of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was successfully held in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University. The high-level forum, focusing on the "frontiers of architecture and urban and rural planning", was hosted by the Faculty of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, organized by the Standing Committee of the Ministry of Technology and Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Academic and Publishing Committee of the Faculty of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and co-organized by the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University and Science in China.

The forum is a high-level academic activity under the unified leadership of the Presidium of the Faculty of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and jointly organized by the Standing Committee of the Faculty of Specialties and the Academic and Publishing Committee of the Division. The forum aims to promote the exploration of cutting-edge scientific theories and technologies, promote the in-depth development of the research system of discipline development strategy, promote interdisciplinary integration and international academic exchanges, discover and cultivate outstanding talents, advocate scientific democracy, encourage academic contention, and give full play to the leading role of the Faculty in the frontier of science and technology and future innovation and development in mainland China. This forum invited important experts and scholars in the field of architecture and urban and rural planning to enhance exchanges through keynote reports and exchange seminars, and exchange discipline development and cutting-edge research around the "frontier of architecture and urban and rural planning".

At the opening ceremony, Professor Wu Jiang, Academician of the French Academy of Architectural Sciences and Dean of the Institute of Fine Governance of Megacities of Tongji University, Professor Zhang Li, National Engineering Survey and Design Master and Dean of the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University, Professor Han Dongqing, National Engineering Survey and Design Master and Professor of the School of Architecture of Southeast University, Professor Zhang Jie, National Engineering Survey and Design Master and Professor of the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University, Professor Li Xiangning, Dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University, and Professor Sun Yimin, National Engineering Survey and Design Master and Professor of South China University of Technology, made keynote reports respectively. The forum was jointly convened by Academician Zheng Shiling, Academician Wu Shuoxian and Academician Chang Qing of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Executive Chairman). At the opening ceremony of the forum, Academician Zheng Qinghua, President of Tongji University, said that in the field of architecture and urban and rural planning, Tongji University empowers smart cities with digital artificial intelligence technology, promotes intelligent construction with human-machine collaboration, and serves the "double carbon goal" with green buildings, so as to fully empower the transformation and upgrading of traditional disciplines with digital technology. He hoped that the forum would focus on the international frontier and major national strategies, and focus on how to integrate the new generation of information technology into traditional disciplines, so as to cultivate future-oriented innovative and top-notch talents for the country, and also contribute wisdom to the construction of people's cities. Academician Zheng Shiling and Academician Wu Shuoxian of the Chinese Academy of Sciences respectively introduced the background and purpose of the forum, as well as the connotation, theory and future development of the forum exploration discipline. Academician Duan Jin of the Chinese Academy of Sciences believes that as a cutting-edge academic exchange platform, the forum is conducive to scholars learning from each other Xi and promoting it. Li Cundong, a national engineering survey and design master and secretary-general of the Architectural Society of China, said that under the current urban development model that pays equal attention to quality improvement and incremental structural adjustment, architecture and urban and rural planning can contribute to the challenges, explore and build a discipline theory system in line with the actual situation of the mainland, and help the construction of the built environment and ecological civilization in contemporary China. Academician Zhuang Weimin of the Chinese Academy of Engineering wished the vitality of this ancient and emerging discipline of architecture through an online speech, and hoped that the forum would receive wider repercussions in the industry and academia. Li Xinggang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, also said online that exploring the theory and practice of contemporary Chinese architecture based on cultural consciousness from a global perspective, and understanding, interpreting and constructing its own value system are the core issues of the architectural discipline, and it is necessary to develop and establish the dominance of the environment on the basis of adhering to people-oriented.

The keynote speakers, Professor Wu Jiang of Tongji University, Professor Zhang Li of Tsinghua University, and Professor Han Dongqing of Southeast University, respectively gave wonderful reports on the topics of "Urban Renewal Implementation Path and Key Technologies for the "Steady-State Period" of Urban Development", "Urban Human Factors: Reading and Designing High-quality Life", and "Improving Quality, Increasing Efficiency, and Reducing Carbon Emissions: Research Issues on the Integrated Design of Cities and Buildings".

The keynote speakers, Professor Zhang Jie of Tsinghua University, Professor Li Xiangning of Tongji University, and Professor Sun Yimin of South China University of Technology, respectively gave wonderful reports entitled "Integration of Culture and Green, Symbiosis of the Old and the New: Technical Exploration and Practice of Urban Protection and Renewal in China", "History, Criticism and Theory: A Preliminary Study of the Paradigm of Contemporary Chinese Architectural History Research", and "Smart Construction: Thinking and Practice Towards a New Paradigm".

After the six keynote speeches, Zheng Shiling, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, summarized the successful convening of the forum on behalf of the three conveners (executive chairmen) of the forum. Academician Zheng Shiling said that the six keynote speeches were very exciting, and the speakers explored the new paradigm of Chinese architecture from different perspectives, and the current discipline is facing major challenges, whether it is research theory or engineering practice, we must pay close attention to the frontier exploration of the discipline, strengthen the interdisciplinary integration, and work together for the future development of Chinese architecture, and work together to create a better future.

After the keynote speech, all the participants started two roundtable discussions. The first roundtable discussion focused on "The Theory and History of Contemporary Urban Architecture Criticism in China", which was co-chaired by Professor Zhang Li, Dean of the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University, and Professor Wang Junyang, School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Nanjing University. Speakers included Ge Ming, Jin Lei, Li Hua, Zhang Lufeng, Lu Yongyi, Yang Yuzhen, Zhang Xiaochun, Liu Kan, Wang Kai, Tang Keyang, Feng Lu, Yi Na, Han Tao, Ru Lei, Ye Yang, Wu Hong, Mo Wanli, Zhu Ye, etc. The experts and scholars who participated in the discussion explored the theoretical basis and historical context of Chinese contemporary urban architecture criticism from multiple perspectives, deeply discussed the development status of architectural criticism, and put forward the hope that this forum will provide useful ideas and suggestions for the development of Chinese contemporary urban architecture criticism. The second roundtable discussion focused on "Practices and Methods of Contemporary Urban Architecture Criticism in China", which was co-chaired by Professor Sun Yimin of South China University of Technology and Huang Juzheng, Editor-in-Chief of Architectural Journal. Speakers included Kong Yuhang, Du Chunlan, Ding Wowo, Li Xiaofeng, Zhang Ming, Liu Yichun, Wang Hui, Zhuang Shen, Tong Ming, Zhi Wenjun, Xu Jie, Hua Xiahong, Zhang Yuxing, Wang Zhu, Feng Guochuan, Li Wuying, Xu Haohao, Dong Yiping, Ai Xia, etc. The experts put forward the views that architectural criticism should influence decision-making through diversified means, actively pay attention to the industry, help the discipline to feed the industry, and construct a theoretical system based on local practice, so as to promote the depth and breadth of architectural criticism in practice.
This forum brought together a group of well-known experts and scholars in the field of architecture and urban and rural planning, who had full academic discussions and exchanges on the future development of architecture and urban and rural planning in the process of Chinese-style modernization. The successful holding of this forum will play an important role in promoting the theoretical construction and technological development of this frontier field of the discipline.
