Professor Tao Yong, a well-known ophthalmologist, pointed out that the close and refined use of the eyes when facing the mobile phone screen for a long time will exacerbate fatigue, induce myopia, cause dry eyes and other dry eye symptoms, and bury hidden dangers to eye health.

In addition, the low flicker of the mobile phone screen, whether it filters harmful blue light, the ability to automatically adapt to the surrounding light environment, and whether it can adapt to the daily rhythm of people's daily life will affect the health of the eyes.

This time, we selected 16 mobile phones from different brands, starting from each time of the day, and selected the four scenes that are most likely to hurt the eyes, and carried out an all-day eye protection challenge to see which mobile phones can finally withstand our challenge and be called an eye-friendly mobile phone.

Challenge 1: Natural colors show eye protection

We are in constant change of light conditions almost all the time of the day – as the sun rises and sets, and the scenery changes, whether it is the intensity of the light or the color temperature of the light, it changes all the time. At this time, our mobile phone screen should also be like a chameleon, adaptively adjusting to the environment.

Professor Tao Yong said that in a dazzling outdoor environment, if the screen is not bright enough, reflective, or blurry, it will be easy to see clearly, which will obviously aggravate eye fatigue. In addition, if the color temperature of the mobile phone screen can be consistent with the ambient light, then the uniform visual experience has a lower visual load, which can make the brain "more energy-saving" when processing visual signals, and it is less likely to produce visual fatigue.

In the next test, we will use lights with varying brightness and color temperature to illuminate the screen to simulate the light environment at different times of the day and in different scenes. Only phones that can automatically adjust the color temperature of the screen display in response to changes in lighting will pass this test.

Challenge 2: Natural light-like eye protection

Reading books during lunch breaks is a good Xi, but reading "e-books" is not necessarily a good Xi. Our eyes have evolved in a natural environment that has been adapted to sunlight for a long time, and paper reading is easier and more natural for us, with less pressure on our eyes.

Professor Tao Yong said that there are three main characteristics of natural light: full spectrum, dynamic and diffuse. The dynamic point refers to the fact that the light intensity of sunlight changes slowly in real time. The light intensity of an electronic screen is usually single and constant, and it is directed to the eyes. In order for our visual system to adapt to this variation of light, additional adjustments are required, which in turn exacerbates the load on the eyes.

In this test, we observed the changes in the phone's screen over a two-hour period in a stable environment, and only those with a screen that emits light and showed a slow change were considered to have passed the test.

In our tests, there were two devices with screens that showed a dynamic change in the intensity of natural light.

Challenge 3: Sleep aid shows eye protection

Sunrise and sunset resting are the rules of the ancients. Nowadays, when people have mobile phones, they really can't sleep. And the more I play with the mobile phone, the more energetic I feel, often holding the mobile phone until dawn, and the next day I feel very uncomfortable in my eyes. This is because the light emitted by the screen at night, especially the cold white and warm screen light, contains more blue light.

Staring at such a screen for a long time at night, the blue light emitted by the screen will inhibit the body's melatonin secretion, making you awake. Therefore, playing with the mobile phone before going to bed will make it more and more difficult to fall asleep. In addition, staying up late for a long time without sleeping will also disrupt the normal rhythm of tear film secretion on the surface of the eye, and even induce dry eye syndrome.

In this test, we set the phone to four hours before and after sunset, and monitored the corresponding changes in the screen in real time, and only the phone with a change in color temperature over time could pass the test.

After our tests, most mobile phones have built-in timed triggered eye protection mode, which will change the color temperature of the screen display at a certain point in time, so that the human eye still needs a while to adapt, and it is not good for eye protection. Six of these phones passed this test because they were able to slowly change the color temperature of the screen over time, and gradually adjust it in situations that are difficult for humans to perceive without the need for the human eye to adapt to it.

Challenge 4: Dimming and eye protection in extremely dark environments

In fact, lying in bed and playing with the mobile phone, the more you play, the more you can't fall asleep, it's just a small problem, the bigger problem is the strobe caused by the dimming of the mobile phone screen in a dark light environment.

At present, the OLED self-luminous screen used by mainstream mobile phones adopts PWM pulse dimming mode, which is a dimming method that uses the characteristics of human vision stay, but under low light and low brightness conditions, the flickering sense of low-frequency dimming screen will be more obvious.

Professor Tao Yong said that for some light-sensitive people, the flickering of the screen will exacerbate the fatigue of the human eye. Because before you know it, the frequent flickering of the screen causes the pupils to dilate and shrink frequently, causing the sphincter fatigue of the pupils. According to the "Technical Requirements for LED Indoor Lighting (2015)", when the refresh rate of LED lights is above 3125 Hz, it can basically be regarded as "flicker-free". If the mobile phone screen can also increase the refresh rate like eye-friendly lamps, it is not easy for the brain and human eyes to perceive the changes in the screen, which can reduce the impact of visual fatigue caused by strobe to a certain extent.

Based on this, in this test, we adjusted the screen of the phone to different levels of brightness, and then increased the shutter speed of the camera, so that we could observe the "black bar" caused by the dimming of the phone on the screen of the phone. The width of this black bar represents the dimming frequency of the screen, the narrower the black bar, the higher the dimming frequency of the screen, and the lower the risk to human eye health.

From our observations, we can see that the Honor 100 Pro has significantly more and denser black bars than other models at low to medium brightness, which proves that it uses a higher dimming frequency. When the screen brightness is reduced to 10nit, the Redmi K70 series can also enter a narrower black bar state. So in this test, Glory passed perfectly, and Redmi also passed the test.
