"Ask the Boundless" Wang Renjun: Reading the Great Man and Inheriting the Revolutionary Spirit

With delicate details of life, we will create a revolutionary great man with warmth

Q: How many times have you played Mao Zedong in "Ask the Boundless", and what is the difference between this time and the previous ones?

Wang Renjun: The drama "Ask the Boundless" is the fifth time I have had the honor to play Chairman Mao Zedong, and I am inspired by the spirit of Chairman Mao both inside and outside the play. For example, the movie "1921" depicts Chairman Mao, who is full of vigor and flourishing, and the TV series "Bloody Glory" shows the darkest moment of the Chinese revolution from 1927 to 1935, which is full of vicissitudes and endured humiliation; and "Ask the Boundless" This drama tells the story of the period from 1921 to 1927, from just after participating in the First National Congress, with dreams, ready to show off their strengths, and asking questions about the country, to learning from the pain, recognizing the reality, and finally to in-depth investigation, summing up experience, and finding the correct revolutionary road. The changes of the characters in each period need to be portrayed by the actors.

Q: The drama "Ask the Boundless" uses the details of life to shorten the distance between the great man and the audience, what details of life did you show during this period?

Wang Renjun: The drama "Ask the Boundless" portrays the character image of the young Chairman Mao from different sides and different angles, such as: Chairman Mao, who has just participated in the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China from Shanghai, and Chairman Mao who is worried about the country about where the Chinese nation will go, and Chairman Mao, who is a father who takes care of the child after the child is born. Chairman Mao was very loving to his family, including his younger brothers and sisters, and wanted to take more care of them, but the conditions did not allow it, and he wanted to engage in greater causes. We have also made a lot of trade-offs in terms of the balance between career and family.

Q: How do you strike a balance between authenticity and art, and do you design any small details to bring yourself closer to the image?

Wang Renjun: When interpreting historical archetypal characters, the restoration is still processed, and the scale and proportion in the middle are relatively difficult to grasp, so I have been making a lot of attempts. When filming the drama "Ask the Boundless", in fact, I lost a lot of previous experience and some previous accumulation, through previous understanding, accumulation, understanding, thinking, gaining some new understanding, and injecting fresh emotions. There is a scene where the husband and wife complain to each other by the river, Chairman Mao is a good husband who has responsibility and support in front of his lover, and he can't show pessimism in front of his wife, but as an actor, it is difficult not to develop associations, so when interpreting, he still left a line of tears in restraint.

Q: Playing Mao Zedong has to be reviewed by a national audience, how did you resolve the pressure and motivation?

Wang Renjun: How to transform the expectations of the national audience for this role into motivation, I think this is also one of the homework that actors should digest and do, you can see that the sea of flowers that people miss Chairman Mao has never withered, which inspires us creators to tell the story of Chairman Mao with heart, affection and strength.
