On the 28th, according to the Supreme Court of South Korea, in the case of victims of forced labor conscription by Japanese companies during the colonial period suing related Japanese companies for compensation in the morning of the same day, the Supreme Court of South Korea rejected the appeal of Japanese companies against the previous judgment and ruled in favor of the plaintiff victims of forced labor and their families.
On the same day, the South Korean Supreme Court upheld the lower court's judgment and ordered Japan's Hitachi Shipbuilding Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to pay compensation to the Korean victims.
This is the first time in one week that the Supreme Court of South Korea has ruled in favor of the plaintiff in a similar case. South Korea's Supreme Court last week ordered Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Nippon Steel to compensate victims of forced labor during colonial rule.
According to a report by Kyodo News on the 28th, the director of the Asia and Oceania Bureau of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hiroyuki Ayuki, summoned the South Korean minister to Japan on the same day on the judgment of the South Korean Supreme Court, saying that he could not accept the verdict and protested.
Disputes between Japan and South Korea over forced labor and other issues have been going on for years, affecting bilateral relations.
