However, as fate would have it, just as she was looking forward to the future, a tragedy quietly struck.
On December 11, 1994, the Tsinghua Folk Band held a special performance to commemorate the 129th anniversary at the Beijing Literature and Art Hall. Zhu Ling participated in most of the program and performed the guqin song "Guangling San" solo.
Sun Wei was a classmate who took classes with Zhu Ling and was also a member of the band. In the performance of 129, Sun Wei was Zhu Ling's substitute.
In October 1994, Zhu Ling's eyes were temporarily blind twice, and his blurred vision lasted for several days.
She underwent eye examinations at Tsinghua University Hospital and the Third Hospital of Peking Medical University, but doctors did not find a problem. Beginning on November 24, Zhu Ling had strange symptoms of poisoning: first he had a stomachache and he couldn't eat, then (December 5) he had an upset stomach, and finally (December 8) he began to lose his hair, and all of it fell out within a few days. In December 1994, Zhu Ling insisted on participating in the special performance of the Tsinghua Folk Band in the Beijing Literature and Art Hall despite her illness, and she played the guqin song "Guangling San" solo. He was discharged on 23 January 1995 after one month of hospitalization.
On February 20, 1995, the new semester began, and Zhu Ling returned to school. On February 27, she suffered severe pain in both legs, her condition worsened on March 6, and on March 9, Zhu Ling's parents took her to the neurology specialist clinic of Union Medical College Hospital, where Professor Li Shunwei thought that the symptoms were similar to a case of thallium salt poisoning in the 60s.
In order to confirm the diagnosis, Professor Li Shunwei contacted Professor Zhang Shoulin from the Institute of Labor Health of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and asked him to diagnose Zhu Ling. Based on the symptoms, Zhang Shoulin suspected that Zhu Ling was suffering from acute thallium or arsenic poisoning, but the institute could not detect it.
Because Zhu Ling and his parents and Tsinghua University denied exposure to thallium salts, and Union Medical College Hospital did not have the conditions to test for thallium poisoning, they have not been tested.
Zhu Ling was in poor health before the second poisoning, and he was very active in school, almost only moving between dormitories and classrooms. Her contact with people is very limited, and the number of people who have the opportunity to poison is even rarer.
It is understood that at that time, only Tong Aijun's research group used thallium salts in Tsinghua University, and only Sun Wei was an undergraduate student in this research group, and he lived in the same dormitory building and the same dormitory room with Zhu Ling.
Zhu Ling's parents recently revealed that the second time they were poisoned, the test found that the poison dose was extremely large, several times more than the lethal amount.
She underwent eight exchange transfusions but still had a large amount of the toxin, which meant that it was a continuous process of poisoning that required her to take the poison every day. If it is acute poisoning, there is usually a violent gastrointestinal reaction, and even directly leads to death.
According to the police investigation, they visited more than 200 chemical supply stores and other places that may have thallium salt, and concluded that Zhu Ling could not have come into contact with thallium salt through other means other than Tsinghua, so this must be a case of deliberate poisoning. Based on the above situation, although there is no direct evidence, all clues point to Sun Wei.
Frankly, the police did a lot of investigative work in the beginning, and the school also took some measures to extend the investigation, such as withholding the suspect's graduation certificate. But the result is regrettable, and it can be said that it is a small loss.
First of all, the best opportunity to file a case was missed. When Zhu Ling was poisoned for the second time, neurologists at Union Hospital actually suspected that it was due to exposure to light metals, such as thallium and beryllium. But Tsinghua University, perhaps overconfident in the lab's management system at the time, firmly denied such suspicions, insisting that Zhu Ling could not have come into contact with thallium metal while he was at school.
As a result, the hospital did not test for thallium metal poisoning again, which also caused everyone to not think about poisoning. There was a period of about a month from the initial suspicion to the final confirmation of thallium poisoning, which gave the poisoners ample time and opportunity to destroy the evidence. This also seriously delayed Zhu Ling's condition, causing her to be permanently paralyzed, mentally retarded, and almost blind, with no possibility of recovery.
Another reason is that the key evidence is all gone. When someone suspected that someone had deliberately poisoned him, Zhu Ling's parents called the police that night, requesting that Zhu Ling's belongings at school be sealed and that his classmates in the dormitory temporarily move out to protect the scene. But unfortunately, the school said that the students would travel collectively, so the dormitory would not keep people, and the result was not enough attention.
Between April 28 and May 7, 1995, Zhu Ling's dormitory was burglarized. To make matters worse, none of the valuables left outside were lost, and most of the stolen items were household items, including Zhu Ling's water cups, Chinese medicine bottles, cosmetics and toiletries. Obviously, the perpetrators are more concerned with "destroying evidence" than with property.
The disappearance of this key evidence is one of the important reasons why this case has not been solved so far.
