The Russian-Ukrainian war has lasted for 673 days, and both sides of the war claim to have completed their tasks and goals for 2023.
Let's start with Russia's overall tasks and goals, which were authorized by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022 to conduct a special military operation in Donbass.

To that end, we will work to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine and bring to justice those who have committed countless bloody crimes against civilians, including Russian citizens.
It can be summarized in two points:
1. Protect ethnic Russians in the eastern part of the country
This goal has been basically achieved, Russia has fully controlled the four prefectures of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporozhye, and Kherson, and more than 90% of the people living in the four regions of eastern Ukraine are ethnic Russians, and the four regions of eastern Ukraine have already been incorporated into Russia by referendum.

2. Demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, trial of Zelensky and high-ranking Ukrainian personnel
At present, it has not yet been realized, and although the Russian side has inflicted heavy losses on the Ukrainian army, it is still far from demilitarizing and denazifying Ukraine, let alone the trial of the top echelons of the Ukrainian government.

Judging from the current situation, this goal may be difficult to achieve, Russia does not have the ability to destroy Ukraine under conventional warfare, and the United States and Western countries can allow Ukraine to be defeated, but they will never allow Russia to completely occupy Ukraine.
The overall task and overall goal of Ukraine is to recover the lands occupied by Russia, including the Crimean Peninsula, to make Russia pay reparations for the war in Ukraine and to try Putin.

At present, there is no hope for Ukraine, the Crimean Peninsula has joined Russia for nearly 10 years, the four lost places in eastern Ukraine are also firmly occupied by Russia, the military assistance of the United States and the West has been sharply reduced, the domestic situation is in crisis, and Ukraine may collapse at any time.
The overall tasks and goals of both sides have not been completed by either side, so let's take a look at the tasks and goals for 2023.
Putin did not mention the tasks and goals of 2023 in his 2023 New Year's speech, nor did he mention the special military operation in the six major tasks proposed at the beginning of 2023, but judging from Russia's strategic posture and Putin's speech, Russia's construction of a defense line in eastern Ukraine to resist Ukraine's counteroffensive is Russia's task and goal in 2023, and it may even be the ultimate goal.
On the Ukrainian side, Zelensky proposed in his 2023 New Year's address that "2023 will be the year of return." Let the people return. Returning soldiers to their families. Let migrants return to Ukraine. Return the land to Ukraine. ”
Of course, these New Year's speeches are not official tasks and goals, but Zelensky began to play up the big counteroffensive in the spring of 2023, and he has not made the slightest progress since the announcement of the start of the big counteroffensive on May 29, so we don't know what Ukraine's tasks and goals in 2023 are, maybe it is Zelensky's tasks and goals in 2023 that Ukraine has not collapsed!
