On a sunny and calm day in early December, Montreal part-time model Kim Bruneau dived off the coast of Nassau, Bahamas, in a pink tutu, with her goal of setting a new Guinness World Record for an underwater model.

From his home in Montreal, Bruno, 38, said: "Being a model is the hardest part of facing this underwater challenge because I put my life in their hands. ”

Bruno swam to a depth of 130 feet (40 meters) with photographer Pia Oyarzun and a large group of assistants. There, Bruno removed her gas tank and mask, held her breath and asked the photographer to take a record-breaking photo of her.

Every few minutes, an assistant would come over with a gas tank and let Bruno breathe. Then she held her breath again and posed for the photographer.

In this way, the film crew took 130 minutes of pictures at a depth of 130 feet. It set a new Guinness World Record for the deepest underwater model photo.

"When you put your heart and soul into something, there's really no limit. They say the sky is the limit. The bottom of the sea is the limit," Bruno said. "I took off the mask, and the moment I took it off, it had to be complete trust. ”

After 9 minutes, the film crew began to rise, stopping again in the process to take pictures at different depths. They filmed a total of 37 minutes.

Oyazun said safety is the biggest challenge in deep-sea shooting.

"It's very difficult to pose underwater. Your body wants to move. You make expressions when you're not breathing," she said. "You'll never know Kim is 130 feet underwater. She is so relaxed and comfortable that you will feel like she is 10 feet deep. I'm still in shock. I still can't understand because it's a huge achievement. ”

Before his epic filming achievement, Bruno endured a long struggle to conceive and have a baby. Bruno has had infertility for years. After failing her treatment in Montreal, she moved to Mexico, where she found a doctor for fertility treatments while starting freediving and scuba diving.

"I went to Costo and spent $50 on a mask and fins. I've never snorkeled before," Bruno said. "I jumped into the water, and it was a world I had never seen before. There are fish everywhere. There was silence all around. My body is light and free. For a moment, I didn't feel the pain and hardship I was experiencing. ”

Bruno was trained in freediving in Mexico and documented her journey on Instagram. She also got her diving certification and started her diving journey. She got in touch with Oyazun, a photographer and diver, and together they took some stunning underwater photos in the Bahamas, where Oyazun is located.

Although worried about infertility, Bruno never feels stressed underwater.

"I think part of the reason I was able to get pregnant was because I started diving," she said. "I've tried everything. People tell me about therapists, Chinese herbs, acupuncture. I do everything to relax, but it doesn't work. When I dive, I feel free. I felt weightless. It's a different world. It's so unique that you don't have time to think about the stresses of life. ”

Bruno eventually meets a doctor in Florida, so she moves there to continue her fight for pregnancy. Despite being told that it was unlikely that she would get pregnant, shortly after contacting the doctor, Bruno became pregnant. To commemorate the pregnancy, she and Oyazun took some underwater photos in the Bahamas.

"Diving is so important in my journey. The photos were taken beautifully and I will never forget them. ”

Bruno finally gave birth to Ella in January. By the time she and Ao Yazun decided to try for the world record, she hadn't been diving for a year and a half.

Filming took place in the Bahamas in early December. In preparation for the shoot, Bruno only practiced Xi a few times in a pool in Montreal, saying: "It's a way to honor Ella and me." ”

Oyazun said she was thrilled to set the record, but beyond that, she also documented Bruno's incredible journey to become a mother.

"Underwater photography and deep diving, it's a male-dominated field," she said. Yes, we did. ”

Bruno hopes her infertility and diving trips will inspire others. "There are no words to describe how amazing this is. I don't take it for granted because I put in a lot of effort to do it. ”

She said she was disappointed that infertility treatment in Quebec was so expensive and hopes to one day be able to help women who can't afford to get pregnant.
