On December 26, 2008, the first escort group of the Chinese Navy, consisting of the Wuhan, Haikou and Weishanhu ships, set sail from Sanya to carry out escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters.

This is the first time that the mainland has used military force to safeguard its national strategic interests overseas, it is the first time that our military has organized maritime combat forces to go overseas to fulfill international humanitarian obligations, and it is also the first time that our navy has protected the security of important transportation lines in the far seas.

On June 30, 2010, the sixth escort group of the Chinese Navy set sail from Zhanjiang, Guangdong. The formation consisted of the Kunlun Mountain, Lanzhou, and Weishanhu ships, among which the "Kunlun Mountain" dock landing ship made its first appearance in the escort operation of the Chinese Navy.

In December 2018, as the command ship of the 31st batch of escort formations of the Chinese Navy, the Kunlun Mountain once again went to the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters to carry out escort missions.

From the end of March to the beginning of April 2015, the 19th batch of escort ships of the Chinese Navy, the Linyi, Weifang and Weishanhu ships, successively transferred to three countries, four ports and one island to safely evacuate the compatriots of the motherland and some foreign citizens from war-torn Yemen. This is also the first time that a Chinese Navy ship has berthed in a foreign port to directly evacuate Chinese compatriots.

From 2015 to 2016, the 20th batch of escort formations of the Chinese Navy was directly transferred to the round-the-world mission after completing the escort mission. The formation crossed the Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans, and visited Sudan, Egypt, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Portugal, the United States, Cuba, Mexico, Australia, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, and other countries.
