On December 22, the 20th Anniversary Seminar on the Construction of Intellectual Property Discipline of Tongji University was held. Zheng Qinghua, President of Tongji University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, attended the meeting and delivered speeches, Francis Gurry, former Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization, Tian Lipu, former Director General of the State Intellectual Property Office, Wu Handong, former President of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, Rui Wenbiao, Director of the Shanghai Intellectual Property Office, Xie Xiaoyong, Secretary-General of the China Intellectual Property Research Association, Lv Guoqiang, former Director General of the Shanghai Municipal Intellectual Property Office, Dong Qi, former Vice President of Tongji University, Lei Xinghui and more than 70 guests from 31 universities and units attended the event.
Zheng Qinghua expressed his heartfelt thanks to the leaders and experts attending the meeting for their long-term guidance and assistance to Tongji University and Shanghai International Intellectual Property Institute (hereinafter referred to as "CNIP"). He said that the 20 years of development and practice of the intellectual property discipline of Tongji University have proved that the far-sighted discipline layout and firm and powerful practice are important guarantees for the development of the discipline. Over the past 20 years, Tongji University has unswervingly promoted the construction of intellectual property disciplines, adhered to the global governance of intellectual property, cultivated international intellectual property talents, and adhered to the strategy of building a strong country with intellectual property and the construction of an international intellectual property center city, and has achieved remarkable results in the cultivation of international intellectual property talents, academic research and international cooperation. The construction of intellectual property discipline is the need of a strong country, the needs of the times, and the need for development, and the convening of this seminar is timely and of great significance. It is hoped that the college can take international cooperation, interdisciplinary and intra-city collaboration as the starting point, on the basis of the existing advantages of running a school, aim at cutting-edge issues, condense the direction of disciplines, solidly promote the construction of first-level interdisciplinary disciplines and intellectual property professional degrees, benchmark against the world-class intellectual property platform, gather international outstanding teachers, further strengthen the construction of talent team, and reach a higher level in the cultivation of international high-end intellectual property talents and international joint scientific research, showing a new atmosphere in the construction of intellectual property disciplines.
Gurry congratulated Tongji University on its 20th anniversary of the establishment of the intellectual property discipline. He said that it was a period of rapid development and fruitful history, including the establishment of CNIPA, the continuous enrichment of the curriculum content, the continuous participation of international faculty and students, and closer cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and internationally renowned universities. Tongji University has long recognized the importance of the discipline of intellectual property and its close relationship with the Tongji Department of Science and Engineering and the economic development of Shanghai and China. He is honored to participate in the growing position of Tongji University as an international center of excellence in intellectual property and looks forward to the continued development and growth of Tongji University and CNIPA in the future.
Tian Lipu reviewed the development of China's intellectual property industry from the 80s of the last century to the beginning of this century, and said that the construction of intellectual property disciplines in Tongji University in 2003 was timely and far-sighted. He was sincerely pleased with the remarkable achievements made by Tongji University in the cultivation of intellectual property talents and scientific research in the past 20 years, and hoped that the younger generation of Tongji Intellectual Property could firmly grasp the new historical opportunity period of the mainland's economic transformation to high-quality development and make greater achievements in the field of intellectual property.
Wu Handong said that in the past 20 years, Tongji University has made painstaking efforts and made milestone progress with the construction of intellectual property disciplines as the leader and talent training as the center, and has established a first-level interdisciplinary doctoral degree authorization point for intellectual property. The discipline of intellectual property is interdisciplinary in nature, and a large number of experts and scholars from universities, including Tongji University, have made efforts for the construction of intellectual property discipline, and sincerely hope that the intellectual property discipline of Tongji University will move from the glory of history to the glory of the new era.
Rui Wenbiao said that over the past 20 years, Tongji University has always adhered to an international vision, kept in mind the greatness of the country, focused on the goal of building a strong country and a strong city with intellectual property rights, and continued to deepen exploration and practice around key links such as talent training, scientific research, think tank construction, and international exchanges, and achieved a series of outstanding results. Intellectual property talents are the first resource for the development of intellectual property and the strategic support for the construction of a strong intellectual property city. The Shanghai Municipal Intellectual Property Office will take the implementation of the new round of Memorandum of Understanding between the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and WIPO, as well as the key points of jointly building a high-level reform and opening up of a strong intellectual property city with the State Intellectual Property Office, deepen the joint construction of the Shanghai International Intellectual Property Institute, and support the Academy to accelerate the development of a world-class intellectual property talent training and think tank platform.

Subsequently, representatives from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University, Chinese People's University, Fudan University, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Shanghai University, East China University of Political Science and Law and other sister universities, Beijing Intellectual Property Research Association, Tianjin Law Society Intellectual Property Law Research Association, Shanghai Municipal Procuratorate and other units, representatives of teachers and students of the college and outstanding alumni at home and abroad gathered together to send good wishes for the 20th anniversary of the construction of Tongji intellectual property discipline. The experts at the meeting congratulated the 20th anniversary of the construction of the intellectual property discipline of Tongji University, affirmed the achievements of the college in talent training and discipline construction, and wished the construction of intellectual property discipline and the National Intellectual Property Institute of Tongji University to get better and better.
The construction of the intellectual property discipline of Tongji University began with the establishment of the Intellectual Property School in March 2003. In November 2016, with the support of WIPO and the State Intellectual Property Office, the Shanghai Municipal Government established the "Shanghai International Intellectual Property Institute" with the support of Tongji University to build a world-class intellectual property college with Chinese characteristics. Over the past 20 years, the construction of intellectual property discipline of Tongji University has always been aimed at supporting the construction of an intellectual property power, with the mission of cultivating high-level, interdisciplinary and international intellectual property talents and carrying out multidisciplinary interdisciplinary theoretical research on frontier issues of intellectual property.
This year, in order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Tongji's intellectual property discipline, CNIPA held a series of academic activities, including inviting more than 20 well-known experts and scholars from WIPO, University of Munich in Germany, University of Tokyo in Japan, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, University of Hong Kong and other cooperative units to give special academic reports, as well as the 2nd Shanghai Intellectual Property Development Forum, the 6th WIPO-Tongji International Intellectual Property Forum, the 5th EU-China Symposium on Innovation and Competition, More than 10 academic seminars such as the sub-forums of the 20th Shanghai International Intellectual Property Forum.
